Why have labour prices for gas safe engineers dropped so dramatically

Why have labour prices for gas safe engineers dropped to ridiculous levels, I have seen the hourly rate as low as £8.00 an hour, what the he'll is going on, for a profession that is ment to be so highly rated and policed it's become rediculous.?

i have seen loads of posts with people describing there rates from different parts of the country, i didn't realise it was a no go area

You can discuss what you like afaic.

Rates are down due to supply and demand. More people chasing fewer jobs and some desperate people.

There has never been anything special about this trade. It is much the same as any other trade and will provide you with a living.

Why shouldnt I be talking rates, in some places engineers are being paid less than unskilled pele is that right, after all the time and effort that goes into becoming gas safe, that's unless you take the crash course and walk out with qualifications with no practical experience what so ever. Is that right then, or should we not talk about that either?

You can post any were about rates and what you are on however you will find you will not get any real meaningfull responce unless it is in the arms and of course in a open forum you will get someone saying they are on 50p an hour and that is all gas plumbers are worth ect and then wind everyone up coz we all know we a worth at least £1.30

Where do you base your information from?

Are you gsr and what do you charge?

With all that is behind the scenes in being GSR & self employed £30/hr is cheap! I personally think you're takin' way down the lines of the "exception" rather than the "rule!" IMO

i enjoy not having a boss and flexible hours, not the pay, i'd make more working at nissan..

i find it crazy how some guys wanna make their job even harder by following the job by the book, follow every regulation, get stressed by their work and what others are doing wrong..

what they really should be thinking about is making sure they're safe and making sure they arent going to kill someone, common sense most of it and the rest can get into my head whenever i feel like it, becuase im not paid enough to know every little detail..

i feel relaxed and im happy, so im not too bothered about the pay, i find it crazy people going through college and working for free, does this mean they'll work for free for the rest of their life, because if so, we're all out of a job

a mate o mine went to agencies asking for electricians, they told him we can get you some for 7/8 quid an hour as they will bite your hand off. he said he doesnt want them that cheap as they wont care about the work, he runs a business so obviously wants to pay less but will not take advantage, he said he may try to get them a quid or so cheaper than in prosperous times but not that cheap

with the way the wages are going in the industry you can understand why ive started to grow weed in my next door neighbours garden! anybody know the going price per gram?

I'll post what I charge, £15 an hour+£30 call out

I dont exactly get my phone ringing off the hook either

I have had people in here offering me work for 50-60 quid a day, okay, its cash, but so far I havent ripped off any arms for the work

I dont need the money, I have retired, just do it till the ticket dies, I wont renew it either, there are too many chancers out there now, they dont clean a boiler, just an exhaust check, at least when I do a service I clean out the spiders and check the pressures (even though they never need adjustment) and give it a wipe over

I get more work sorting out taps and bathrooms, micky mouse stuff, really, it covers my diesel, a few beers, a packet of smokes

But its upto the customer how much they want to pay, if the price you give isnt want they want to pay, they get someone else in, most people dont even know about GS, they still ask about corgi

Like it or not, we are still competeing with the Polish bloke who can do it all, joe public just wants as much for as little as possible, he dont care where the bloke comes from

Saw a job advert on job centre website about 3 weeks ago wanting a Gas safe plumber with cscs card, own tools and transport for a job in Sheffield and they were offering......................wait for it.............£7 an hour! I almost phoned em up to point out that they had missed the 1 off the beginning!
