Cochran Boilers - Croppie - have you worked on them?

Not done anything on one for a very long time but I bet Croppie is familiar with them. Helped a gas engineer plumb one in to a big leisure centre a number of years ago. Quite a beast it was.

    DIY open fire! help

Disagree - I've reinstated a couple of flues and most of them were choked with debris, one had a crack which would have allowed fumes into the house.

Plumbing Advice For Professional and DIY Plumbers in Australia

I just say that if it's a breakdown, I can finish with a full service but it will of course cost more than a standard service. Most of my customers who fall into this category tend to be old folk who are obviously a bit hard up so I'm not too harsh on them. How many of us oil engineers...

Worcester Combi not firing in morning

Got a problem with a Worcester combi not firing in the morning from cold. Boiler approx 14 years old. Pressing the reset button once only gets the boiler to fire OK. The fault is intermittent and happens about once per week. The fault is not connected with frosty weather. The tank had been...

Sooted up boiler and other tips

Just a reminder to folks that when you come across a sooted up boiler (usually where a conventional flue is blocked, a balanced flue gasket breaks down (ex the early Trianco square balanced flues) or a pump wears out), after you have de-sooted the boiler and fixed the problem, it will take...

Converting combi boiler to system boiler

Anyone done this? Have a customer wanting to change a system to thermal store with stove, solar etc. Existing combi boiler they want to use to drive the cyinder as a backup in emergencies. I guess I could just hook it up using the flow and return and disable the hot water side and controls...

Hot water pressure washers - anyone maintain them?

Got asked to look at one this week. Faulty fuel pump. Just wondering if anyone else works with them and are there any typical faults / problems to watch out for?

    Water getting into oil tanks

Have had a lot of this over the last few years. Usually caused by the delivery companies accidentally loosening the fill point when they remove their hoses, allowing rainwater to get round the seal. I stick them up with silicone now.

New toy, electrofusion plastic pipe welder

Picked up one of these on fleabay for an upcoming job. We have a new pig farm complex to plumb in and I figured it would be useful for all the water pipework. Not used one for a couple of years now but itching to try it out. Fed up with leaky compression MDPE fittings. Who else on here has...

tongue and groove DIY bath panel

It's called Matchboarding and you can get it from most timber merchants. Doubt anyone sells it online as it's readily available locally for most people. Carriage charges would make it impractical. You put it vertically in short lengths. Remember to leave a section which can be unslotted to...

    Pipe Threading Die Sharpening

I need a company which can sharpen the cutters in my threading dies by post without charging ridiculous prices. Any suggestions?

Looking for someone to service and maintain my folks Worcester Bosch utility boiler, near Middlesbrough. (I'm OFTEC but not Gas Safe) Established registered tradesman (no cowboys, muppets or rip-off merchants - I'm a heating engineer myself so I know what I'm on about)

Honeywell Smart Fit (VC range) valve service kit

Can anyone tell me what's in the service kit for these valves please (i.e. washer sizes). Don't want to pay £18 for about 3 tiny o rings and one gram of silicone grease unless I have to! Thanks

Trianco leaking balanced flue fault repair

As I get a couple of these to sort every year, here's a few photos of the fix method. For those not in the know, some Eurostars with balanced flues were fitted with a faulty batch of flue gaskets. These gaskets perish over time and allow the flue gases into the air intake giving the telltale...

Reminder NOT to use uncoated copper through cement!

Job yesterday - barn conversion with flood in a wetroom. Copper pipe had been run through a drylined adjoining brick wall. Due to the age and construction of the building, there is always slight dampness in these brick walls as they have no damp course. The moisture content in the wall had...
