    Measuring ground thermal conductivity

How do you measure this? Do you study the ground type and use the MIS3005 lookup tables, if so how? Or commission a report from a specialist, or use the BGS website for reports? This is my biggest concern with ground source, getting this wrong! thanks in advance

Jet black water within a year!

Anyone ever come up against this before? Last year I replaced a 6 year old Ecotec after the heat exchanger split and leaked, this was due to water being black. I powerflushed the system and replaced the boiler, and when I pulled out the magnacleanse magnets there was nothing on there. I thought...

    Bone dry condensate trap

Serviced an Isar on friday and when removing the trap it was bone dry, to the point where what came out was a fine dust. I serviced it last year and I always silicone grease the o rings and rubber pipe. This year it was as if the grease had been completely dried out. Other than this everything...

    Press tool

Looking to purchase a battery press tool for various use. Looking at the following: REMS accu press - looks heavy and bulky compared to the others, but good value (for a press tool!) and easy to come by. Milwaukee M18 force logic - more expensive but more compact and good warranty. Gerberit...

Heat emitter guide - Oversizing factor discrepancy

Anyone else finding the heat emitter guide a pain to work with? I keep finding myself with the same problem. I can size a radiator based on flow temp and heat loss requirements, but the calculated oversizing factor is in the lower star rating than the flow temp. Example @ 40°C flow temp...

    Tepid water - Logic

Anyone had problems with diverter valve passing on hot water with a logic? Can only assume this is the problem on a very annoying intermittent recall. Heating is always on when we are there, crap in the cupboard type job. Manually pushed the diverter valve assembly in and out and the customer...

    Firebird external oil boiler

I have a customer that is set on a firebird external oil boiler. I have no experience with these and have been trying to sway them towards a grant or Worcester equivalent. Anyone have any opinions on the quality of them, looks like a riello rdb burner? Cheers in advance

    Greenstar junior

Anyone had a fault where the boiler seems to get stuck in pump overrun, fire and go out ( then stay in pump over run for 5 mins) etc before? Had 240v on the pump but it wasn't running, swapped pump even though the fault had nothing to do with a pump running but still playing up. ext. controls...

    Heat pump cylinder

How many are replacing with dedicated heat pump cylinders like the dimplex or gledhill large surface area coils, or have you found that you can piggy back a standard & solar coil to achieve a similar result. If a heat pump cylinder, which do you prefer? Thanks in advance

    Ideal isar leak

Was out to an isar he24 a couple of days ago after it leaked (lots) from what I thought was the plate lip seals. Went back yesterday with a washer kit and replaced all 4 lip seals and then noticed the hot pipe O ring was weeping so changed that as well. All was good or so I thought. Just got...

    Black heating water, non magnetic?

Ok so I've replaced a 7 year old ecotec today after the main heat exchanger failed, the system water was jet black, insurance wouldn't cover it, boiler a write off on cost. So, armed with my new 150 ltrs/min powerflush machine courtesy of Williams & Co ( will let you know when the cheque...

    Baxi solo 30HE leaking hex?

Been to a boiler this afternoon, Baxi solo, same as a promax? fixed the initial fault but noticed water in combustion chamber and staining down the outside casing where the manifold bolts throughout the case. It looks like the hex is leaking out of a round recess on the right side of the hex...

DIY gas work and the New ACOP (4th edition - draft )

Competence is hard to prove. incompetence, in this industry, is usually proven following an incident with dramatic consequences and by this time it's too late. That's about where we are with regulation in its current state.
