lame plumber

having just seen another arguement between a proffessional and a diyer on an oil boiler, wouldnt it be better for us just refer to the forum name ie UKPlumbers forum which serves proffessionals in the trade and those with questions not involving safety issues. Or better still set up a oil section for qualified folk in the same manner as the gas side, then life would be so much better for all concerned, no arguements as croppie will kill the thread :)

I only killed that one as it was going tit for tat, I did actually agree with Simon and Mark, however I don't want UKPF getting tarred with the same brush as certain other forums.

I've no problem with DIYer's. I do have a problem with DIYer's who refuse to listen to any advice given that entails them getting a pro in.

It's allright, I won't be giving anymore oil advice unless it's to somebody I know on here that is doing it for a living.

If I was face to face with the idjiot I would have given him a slap though.

The bloke sounded like a right Nob!!

I think as soon as someone who is not gas safe or oftec registered starts asking how to diy they should be banned/blocked

Just treat the OP the same way as you treat gas questions. ie stop em quick and no advice given.
We will not give advice ............. for you and your familes health, playing with oil can be dangerous.
Please go to find an oil engineer.............................
End of.

Just a bit off topic but where does the law stand if someone gave advice on here to a member of public who then hurt themselves after following the advice? Not even necessarily gas or oil related?

There are three tests.

1) Did you owe the other party a duty of care
2) Did you act (or refrain from acting) in a way that constitutes negligence
3) Did they suffer loss or hard which was directly caused by your negligent act (or inaction)

The court would examine all of these tests, and all three have to be satisfied to establish a liability.

I think 1) would be tricky to establish in the case of individual contributors. Could be more of a problem for the site owners, admin and sponsors though.

2) would only apply if you advised something stupid.

3) could easily happen.
