What a ridiculous proposal. A proposal has been presented to restrict 32miles of the M1 to 60mph to reduce emission's and clean up the air to meet EU targets for air quality. Why do I think this is ridiculous? At 60 mph it will take approximately 30 minutes of travel to cover this distance (just over). So that is about 7 minutes longer than traveling at 70mph, which means that the area will be exposed for longer periods to emissions per vehicle. Also does not take into account traffic congestion which is likely to be worse with bottle necks caused by change in speed limits. Where do these so called consultants come from? The only way to reduce traffic emissions is reduction of traffic. So why don't the government invest in more efficient public transport at cost effective prices to encourage people to use public transport?

Interestingly its based on fact. The average speed camera data doesn't lie.

We need to get out of the ****ing EU. why the **** should any of us care what the ********s in Brussels think?

better than 30mph due to people tailgating and causing braking effects that result in traffic flow reducing to b all

If they want to stop congestion, they should be out on the roads prosecuting middle and outside lane hoggers, and introduce overtaking restrictions for hgvs during peak hours.

Facts or common sense?

Both.

What's the point of having a limit of 70 or above when there is no lane discipline and every idiot rides their brakes and doesn't look beyond the car in front.

It has nothing to do with the EU. If you've ever driven across France/Belgium/Germany/Switzerland you'll know that they drive faster than us but the road etiquette is arguably much better and therefore everyone makes progress.

I'd be happy with average speed cameras on all the motorways. I'll get where I need to be quicker.

in germany if you have a crash, the coppers turn up, ascertain whos fault it was and throw the book at them, makes for better drivers!

Absolutely love driving in European continent. Just time yourself between tolls so you don't get a tug. The French love to pull the Belgium's, which is a little amusing. The continental drivers have much more respect on the auto-routes but in cities its like hear, dog eat dog.

I'm with Howsie, it's bad drivers at fault. I look in amazement at some, and they clearly have no idea they're doing anything wrong.

If I had my way, you could apply to be a civilian traffic enforcement agent, whereby you pass a difficult set of tests, in driving theory and proficiency, the result then being you can hand out fixed penalties for bad driving.

Now we're really going OT.

As for the EU, that's a general complaint, not really aimed at the state of our roads/drivers.

Modern day cars are designed to run most efficiently at between 60 and 70 mph. So why am I following idiots at 40 mph in a 60 limit and can't get into 6th gear? Defiantly got the most efficient car for European auto-routes but not for Norfolk which does not have any motorways.

60mph.....obviously they're not catching enough people speeding......I can smell the money rolling in now!

It's a roadlayers waterproof coat !

I went to my osteopath and asked them about a hard shoulder.

I've just read 3 books over the past month or so on climate change.

Do yourself a favour and have a read if you have a bit time.
It is unbelievable how we are being duped and there is nothing we can do about it. All part of the global game.

This is just another step back to the stone age where many think we belong.
