A £400 opportunity to upstage Warmfront

Part of the criticism of Warmfront is the dubious reliability of some boilers they supply, the inadequate warrantee period, and the fact that Warmfront don’t appear to understand the reasoning behind fitting an out side temperature sensor.

Customers who have had 25 years of reliable service from their G band boiler will soon be up in arms when their high Efficiency boiler bust just after the one or two year guarantee runs out, imagine it happening in this weather. These ex G band customers will also be shocked at the costs incurred when repairing these “efficient” boilers should they fail to live up to expectations by being unreliable.

The introduction of the £400 scrap-age scheme is an opportunity for the sole trader to show the real value of the independent installer.

To achive this, those who have not all ready done so, must raise their game and refuse to fit any thing other than boilers with 5 year warrantee and weather compensation controls..

This an opportunity to prove we can be trusted to look after our customers long term heating needs (inc running costs) and give best value for the British Tax payers, rather than taking the short term box ticking maximise profits route that we see travelled by others.

On some of the forums I have placed my previous post I think there may be some confusion about what I refer to as “weather Compensation”, but let me qualify this by adding I am only referring to small to medium domestic properties.

The first Band A condensing boilers I fitted where ALPHA’s, when these run on Central Heating demand the boiler flow temperature is determined by the position of the Radiator Temperature knob.

Therefore at hand over, the installer explains to the customer that if they don’t limit the flow temp, they will not get the expected efficiency out of their new and expensive purchase, and not achieve the full energy savings.

The Band B condensing Combis I fitted where Baxi;s which had boiler temperature indicator lights on the front panel that enabled me to show the customer what I thought was the best max temp to run the boiler at.

All of these appliances where installed with programmable room stat with set back temp facility.

I then went to Telford where at the Viessmann HQ I got the distinct impression that the European Boiler companies were a bit hesitant to mention Weather Compensation to the British Installer because we would A, not understand it, and B, are idle and could not be bothered to carry out the simple task of fitting an out side sensor.

As an example I quote a young lad I got into conversation with at a local merchants counter, “Weather Comp, I don’t go that deep, I give em a Micky Mouse clock, a room stat and that’s their lot.”

No wonder the Boiler Manufacturers on the other side of the channel look down on the Brits.

I confess that it took me a while to understand what Weather comp does.

On the Avanta, Optimax, Vitodens 100 the simple task of wiring up an out side sensor enables the weather comp chip on the PCB to automatically adjust the boiler flow temperature and keeps it as low as possible relative to out side temperature.

The price of the out side sensor can range from £15 for the Avanta through £25 ish for the Ferroli to £35 ish for the Viessmann as it comes with a small wiring harness that plugs into the PCB, Simples!

Obviously this is not a cure for houses that are draughty, poorly insulated or have undersized rads, and for most but not all houses a room stat is needed, however, with a bit of intelligent TRV adjustment, real energy savings can be made as the weather comp automatically adjusts the heat input into the property to match the heat loss, and all achievable at very little cost.

The reason the Manufacturers don’t simply include the out side sensor in the Boiler box is because they think we wont know what to do with it.

This thread is about getting installers, including me, to up our game collectively, to show this and the next Government we are as good if not better than a large private company that’s spending millions of pounds of Tax Payers money taking large profits and providing an inferior service.
