Marcelle

Hi.
My names Marcelle im 23 y/o and have decided that i want to get into the plumbing/gas trade. ive approached various companys that offer these intense training servies, access 2 trade career is the one im most likely to go with. iv been doing alot of research online and im kinda starting to feel a bit hesistant, alot of people are saying you dont get the right qualifacations and experience neccesary and these companys are just interested in making money. also im really concerned about finding a job after iv qualified.

can anyone please give me good advise on the questions i should ask the advisor when i have my interview.

tell me if im wasting my time

and what are the chances of getting a good job after iv qualified

these are the qualifactions they are offering, will i need to find work as a plumbers mate while i do it or will i be employable by anybody after i have qualified.

good training is never a waste of time.but where to get it?.to get a job at the moment c@g 2 minimum you will need. but main problem is the reccesion lots of plumbers chasing to little work.most employers asking for 4 to 5 years post training experience.they can pick and chose now.ask your training provider wich quals are recognised by employers and trade associations ask them to prove it.dont be taken in by plumbing is reccesion proof 30,000 plumbers needed ther are not ask them to prove there are.£50,000 a year most do not earn this .any training company that relies on these claims is only after your money.go to night school if unemployed try to get goverment to train you gets you off of there unemployment numbers.find older plumber to work with.phon all the big plumbing companies ,follow up with a leter even if they tell you on phone that they have no jobs thank them for there time they will proberly keep your letter on file for the future.some of the fast track plumbers i have incountered are keen but know very little

did you take the course im thinking about doing the same many thanks

well did you go for this course because im thinking of doing the same one

No access 2 is a con dont go with them i did join one coures tho if ya want il get u the number

Daz, do what I did & don't don't do it..... They're a capital investment company first, and it just so happens that the product they finance is plumbing courses, they're selling you a loan, the dream and what you really want is a plumbing course that does what it says on the tin and one that you won't be paying off for the next 5 years!

Go elsewhere I did and I'm delighted with my outcome. Half the price and support when I'm out on the job and I get stuck, they're at the end of the phone, will they do the same?

I had these people constantly bombarding me with phone calls and letters saying I had 14 days to sign up.
This was 6 weeks ago and the letters are still coming.
Also the qualifications they are offering are ocn ????? never heard of these. I have saved thousands by doing my research.
I am now on a work placement with a company who have been training people for over 10 years. They also do the renewals for cat1 gas fitters ( I did manage to speak to a few of them ) one of whom said if I did my training through them he would give me the work placement to build up my portfolio.
My advice is to really do your research...I don't want to name the company because i might get a rollocking as it is my first post and I have found the site very informative...p.s. they are based in cleckheaton...

Hello

My name is Chris and I work for Access and I have tried to answer some of your specific questions on this thread.

We're a training company not a finance company, although we do help our students arrange finance if they need it. Our goal is to help people who want to train get the qualifications they need in order to build a career in the trade. This is our passion

We have a full support system, so our mentors are available by phone and email to help our students whenever they need it.

Regarding who OCN are, they are the Open College Network, and are one of the country’s biggest vocational qualification providers. They have been around for over 25 years, and are a great partner for us to work with.

Most importantly, we are not an intensive training company, and we agree that this may not be the right way to learn trade skills. Our training is completed over several months through a combination of learning the theory at home, and attending practical workshops with our team of tutors.

I would like to answer more, but I worry it would turn out looking like advertising! Happy to accept any PMs from people who want to know more though.

Hope this helps

Chris @ Access

Ive gone through them and just got a plumbers mate job starting in the new year training NVQ 2 and NVQ 3 gas. i dont see anything wrong with my training nor does my new boss, its expensive i wouldnt say its not but you are paying to do it faster than collage. at collage your looking at a couple of years to get what you would out of access in 6 months or so!

If you study and get your head down you will learn alot there, the only thing i will tell you its hard to find a job at the moment there are alot of people in the same boat looking for plumbers mate jobs... access are a good company from my point of view and have done everything they told me they would and the finance was a good deal too, low rate so whats the problem you get what you pay for these days.....
