Hi all,

want to see if im pricing my day rate either to low or to high, or even just about right. Im thinking of charging £120 a day at the moment, is this about right? im a bit fed up of this grey area in pricing not knowing what too charge, i know it depends on area, quals, experience etc. But i specialise in bathroom fitting, general plumbing, tiling, 4/5 years experience and based in the south west. No gas or oil quals. I know not many people like giving out there day rate so not looking for everyone to spill, just knowing im in the right or wrong ball park would be a start, frustrating to be pricing up jobs wrong!

Thanks

Honestly if I'm not gonna make £150 (after tax) clear profit in an 8/9 hour day, I'm not happy. Although I don't work on sites generally.

I would say that 120 is too cheap.

How many days does your bathrooms take ?? as you speciallise in bathrooms you must know how long they take and how much money they are worth, are they the top notch ones or cheap straight swops.....I tend to price per unit...

well every bathroom is different, so it can take a few days to a week, or more depending on tiling etc. Again i provide a decent range of bathrooms but then again customers supply there own, so basing the price on day rate is surely better than pricing on per unit if suites have to be moved etc.

In the north west, im gas safe, got all the relavant quals, 5 years exp, but only recently gone on my own, so i charge 120 a day, but when (if) work picks up ill be wanting to make £160 before tax.

Im in southwest and i try £20 p/h on install rates and to be honest i could chuck another fiver on that. I know what you mean about pricing tho as i am sometimes soooo hit and miss . I prefer to knock my materials slightly higher so it reduces the chance of a hit on materials .Btw most tilers i know nail about £25 per meter and earn hell of alot more than me.

Just to be clear, are we talking private jobs here, for your own customers, or subbing/site work?

In that case, you're too cheap by half, depending on the standard of your work. I estimate using £240 a day.

£240 for a general plumber/bathroom fitter? dont think i could stretch to that around here, think il raise my day rate a little so cheers for the feed back guys :)

Tbh mate, I'm in Yorkshire, where everyone's a tight arse! But SOME people will pay better for a better job, it's just finding those people.

There's at least one Polish guy round here at £40 a day as a bathroom fitter, his prices are so cheap it makes people run a mile.

You could earn £40 a day on the tills at Tesco. So that doesn't stack up. Not saying it isn't true, but something is clearly amiss. £200 a week. You can't support a family on that.

you can in latvia!!

its cheaper up here in the east midlands so 5 days at £180 = £900 is the quote and hopefully finish in 4 days 3 days if i am paying you.

WANTED; plumber east midlands £12ph.!!

i used to pay £20ph for a driver fetching and carrying.

Latvia here I come!! LOL.

Yeah, but whats the average wage in Latvia? Its all relative as I'm sure you are aware.

I pay my decorator/general dogs body £100 a day, I pay the other guys £140 a day and I look to make a profit out of them. £40 a day wouldn't pay the bar tab for a lot of blokes I've worked with!

That said, everything is getting more expensive, and I haven't upped rates in a long time. That's despite doing more qualifications, and buying more plant.

If your doing day work you cant be less than £200 p/d imo, tilers down here are £35 p/meter.

£ 180 per day plus parts @ 20% , my customers seem happy to pay this. Otherwise its £35 per hour.

And this is for just a general plumber/ bathroom fitter? Not gas/level 3/oil. So when quoting a bathroom refurb you base your price on your day rate and how long it's going to take e.g. £180 a day- 5 day refurb = £900......Plus materials etc! Sounds good to me :)

I have level 3 and gas, but that's not really relevant I guess.

I work on £240 a day plus materials, but my customers know they're getting a good job, even if they're paying a little more for it. It depends on your target market - I often travel to get the better paid jobs. It can be a pain in the bum but if I'm gonna earn 100% more for 20% more effort, it's worth it.

Nothing wrong with that IMO.
If you are happy with your pay then you will give a better service.

You dont get many 5 day refurbs, that imo would be a rushed job, as im a sole trader I usually take two weeks depending on the size of the job.

Totally agree, and i think its fair to say most of us will adjust our rate dependant on the perception of the customers ability to pay. I.e range Rover sport and merc in the drive, need I say any more.... but don't get greedy and do a good job!!
