You dont get many 5 day refurbs, that imo would be a rushed job, as im a sole trader I usually take two weeks depending on the size of the job.

I know 5 days for a refurb isn't much time, but then again some small bathrooms don't take too long, depending on what needs doing, I was just using it as an example! Because we all know pricing jobs can be so varied, I was just roughly making the point on how you go about quoting jobs, day rate x the amount of days roughly the job will take! Obviously materials + 20%.

Totally agree, and i think its fair to say most of us will adjust our rate dependant on the perception of the customers ability to pay. I.e range Rover sport and merc in the drive, need I say any more.... but don't get greedy and do a good job!!

Very true

Agree with both points. Bathroom I finished last week took 2 1/2 weeks inc tiling. 40 mins to an hour travel every day to get to where the money is.

My rate will vary, if I have plenty of work I charge more. If work is in short supply as it always is just prior to and during the school hols I will drop my rate to get the work.

I have two figures that I look at on a yearly basis:

What I would like to make,
What I need to make,

That way I can adjust the rate as and when. Some years I make more than I would like to make, some years less, but hand on head to touch would, I have never been as low as what I need to make.

Swings and roundabouts.

Everyone has an idea what they'd like to make, but what they actually make is a completely different matter.

In the current economic climate, it's never been harder to price a job. If you go too high, you won't get it, and for every job being priced there are at least five others chasing it.

Selling yourself and your services to the customer is more important than any perceived daily rate. You could have given the customer the highest quote, but they could give you the work because they like you and trust in your abilities. A quotation is only the first basic step, going round and doing a survey is a must and then selling yourself when you're there.

If five guys give a customer a quote, you have to prove how you are the best out of the five.

Agreed.

What is a bathroom fitter?

Is it like a window fitter/ tyre fitter/ dry liner.

The blokes I served my time under would turn in their graves.

bathroom fitters are usually tillers or plasterers that try basic plumbing and call us when they mess up, but a mate of mine is a kitchen and bedroom fitter but was a cabinate maker and carpenter by trade who took his nvq in kitchen fitting to satisfy a company he subs in for , i would class him as a top tradesman to be honest he just coordinates all the other trades me ,his plasterer, sparky, tiller, ect and sticks to what he knows with the carpintery work
