Since moving into house 3 years ago the toilet bowl in upstairs en-suite has always had black gunge forming in it, when plumber came out to fix shower I asked him why he said was normal and just to wipe with tissue. The shower and basin are the same. My husband has just taken the waste pipe from basin off and as it wasn't draining, it was filled with same thick black gunge. It's fine now but can anyone shed some light as to what can be causing it? The rest of the house is fine.
Cheers
Jacqui

not sure exactly what yours is but we had similar with the toilet bowl grey black scale porming in the bottome seemed to be coming down out of the soil pipe side took out pan and removed lots of calcified stuff outlet was 1 third blocked we tracked it down to using toilet cleaners rather than good old bleach the new cleaners seems to calcify in the trap so may be an idea to change the products your using see if that helps

Hi Steve, I use bleach, so I don't think its the products. The toilet gunge is forming where the fresh water enters the bowl and trickles down. I was wondering if it could be coming from our water supply. The gunge in the sink waste pipe was like really thick black jelly, there was only a tiny hole in the middle of the gunge in the u bend where the water was draining. Seems a heck of a lot of gunge to have formed in under 3 years. I'd appreciate anyones ideas. Thanks, Jacqui

We seem to get similar in the cold weather when the radiators are on cremate, some sort of mould along with puddles of condensation. I don't know if yours is the same.

the other thing i would mention is most of the green eco friendly washing up liquids dont seem to break the gease up well
also worth checking your tanks for any undesirables
but usually the gunge in sink traps is down to what your putting down them id try changing products
dont put fat down
and flush at least once a week with a kettle foll of boiling water
sorry just realised its the basin
some soaps and shampoos seem to go to jelly again try diffent products
