The thing is I've also tried raising my price a little.... And then custards want receipts and trade discount and all sorts of tooo and fro-ING before they pay?! What's going on there? Even though I say terms of payment half upfront and the other half once job completed- weeks later I'm still chasing the rest of my blinking money!
Got me by the short and currlies. Makes me fed up... Sometimes

Had this big time lately custs basically ignore any T & C's and basically do what they want . If you go in to heavy from the off with all terms then you loose lots of work.
I speak to other plumbs a lot get the same issues so its quite common .Thing is i can go on a site for e.g. and get £750 a week with no issues or go contracting and get more (albeit tenants)and get paid.

It just seems more and more common to knock a plumber for money

Whilst I agree we all deserve a good day rate. What I don't agree is the assumption that everyone in every area can achieve higher rates.
Some are just to cheap, some are topping out. But not everyone is going to get £400 plus a day, no matter what rousing speech is given. (That's not a pop Croft).

Customers can easily get a rough idea of the materials cost.
No problem nowadays with Internet or even from some of the merchants.
I have stood behind members of the public buying things close to what I pay

I always take any paperwork including user manual etc so I can register the warranty and with gas safe ( once they have paid)
Not needed to but it's a bit of leverage if the delay.

I have found £220 a day works for me at the moment. Obviously it's not what I want to charge but it's enough whilst I build up my reputation.

Problem is down here you have some very reputable people charging less than £200 per day.

Eventually I will build my price up but I feel that I have to build my reputation first otherwise I will just price myself out of all the work.

Do you charge a mark up on materials also?

True. You've got to work to what your market will sustain. I'm lucky in a way that in the last decade there have been a shedload of eastern european plumbers working for peanuts. Everybody went mad for them because they would throw 6-8 guys on a job and do it quick and cheap.

Now it's all falling apart and I turn up looking wise with my grey hair and specs with a slightly sad, sympathetic shake of the head*. Body language which says "Tut tut, I TOLD you so" without actually saying the words...

*Appearances can be deceptive. I'm not very wise, nor very sympathetic. And frankly not all that sad for them either. Shouldn't have gone cheap in the first place, tight sods...

I have it clearly on my website, along with hourly rates - materials are at cost + 20%. If they supply materials, I don't guarantee them.

£400 a day is probably hard to justify I will admit! I think someone else used it as an example and I just seized the opprtunity to show how much less you have to work on a higher wage. I don't think we could get that for small day jobs but some of the bathrooms we have done work out at that. Being honest though, others are pains in the rear and earn us much less per day.

in all honesty I prefer 4 or more decent service repair jobs a day if possible, make more on those than slinging boilers on walls 🙂

Yeah I would as well I can easily earn over £400 a day doing that.

Last Friday I left my house at 9am had an hour and a bit for lunch, still finished by 3 and earned £420. If I could guarantee that every day I would be a happy bunny.
