Hi all
I have an ongoing problem with the CH in my house. Setup is Potterton boiler, salus wireless thermostat.
There are no problems with the Hot water supply. When i ask for heating, the wireless thermostat does send the signal as the green led light comes on the receiver unit next to the boiler. This does about 90% of the time NOT turn on the heating. So i thought i had a problem with the Drayton MA1 actuator as it would not go into position. So i bought a new one and changed it over and it has done no good, i still have the same problem.
The heating did fire up later that day after changing the actuator so i decided to leave the heating in the ON position (i had it on timed before) and just use the wireless thermostat to regulate when i wanted the rads hot by turning down or up the temperature setting.
But even so sometimes if the heating has been"off" and i turn up the temp on the thermostat it does not fire up again. Can any one shed some light on this please, i hope i have explained it clearly!
thanks

slingy

I dont know, the green led light comes on on the receiver. But nothing fires up.

have a read of installation book for RF receiver it may be to close to metal boiler case, how far away is transmiter ? what are walls made of ? lots of things can interfere with signel

Hate to say it but had quite a few problems with them, more the programmer type tho. They aren't that good, but as said they can have interference to mess it up. Think you can change the setting inside, it may be a neighbour has same one and set on same setting.

Receiver is about 2 foot away from boiler/tank (all in loft). I have even took the sender/thermostat unit up in to the loft to try it many many times, and as i say the green light comes on when i call for it but boiler does not fire up(does not move actuator, but this was replaced for a new one) Have not got a manual as system was already in place when i bought the house. Gonna search for one now on t`internet.

thanks marleyco, do you mean the whole wireless sender and receiver unit?

Hi,

Had the same problem with the same brand of rf thermostat recently, it was hit and miss. The customer kept a log and it failed to operate the heating about 70% of the time. The manual tells you how to change the rf channel, there are loads to choose from. I did this for the my customer about 3 months ago and no call back yet. I have read that these units can be affected by wireless networks, cordless phones, microwaves and even other units in nearby houses.

Good luck

And yes mine is one you programme. But also in the airing cupboard i have the drayton control/timer unit for the hot water and central heating ie controls are off.timed.once.on.

I do not use the wireless unit for the timing, just the temperature settings.

thanks pipedream, will play around with the channels tomorrow to see if it helps..
Its too cold in my house- im off for a pint down the local in front of the big roaring log fire--

If the green light is on the boiler should be firing. If it is not then the relay in the wireless unit is not contacting properly. If it sometimes works then I think that is where the problem lies.

To make sure remove the wireless unit & wire the contact wires to a switch (thats all the wireless unit really is) and turn it on & off several times. If the heating works every time then the wireless unit is at fault.

As you have already changed the actuator unit there can not be much else unless there is a programmer?

Salus are well known as a junk brand. If it won't reset get a new one . A Honeywell may be more expensive but they are fit and forget.

have you taken the actuator off the valve to check the valve is moving freely?

the saying buy cheap buy twice is apt here i think lol. i know you didn't buy it but i would upgrade to a better one.

Back from the warm pub and my house is still cold.
When i replaced the actuator i did check the valve(the drayton is a snap on) it seems to be moving freely so was pretty sure that is ok.
As stated above it must be that even the green light comes on, the signal is not being sent so i think tomorrow i will try the switch idea and the jumpers frequency settings on the sender unit. Thanks for all your help guys, i`m actually off to cornwall from hampshire working for 2 weeks and my missus does`nt want to be left with no heating so have to get it fixed by tomorrow lol....

Ask in the morning when the beer is out your system and i'll tell you how to override it.

Hi,beer is out of the system now lol

Overnight the heating did come on, its just a bit random. Going to try switching it off at the timer unit then ON to see if it fires up straight away..
Failing that, how do i over ride it?

Only if you are sure you can do this.
You will need a small piece of wire about 2" long stripped at both ends.
Turn off the power, open up the receiver box and put a link wire between Com and NO. This bridges out the wireless stat.
Refit the reciever cover and turn the power back on.

Will give it a go later,thanks..i did quickly this morning change the jumper settings, reset the system and it fired the boiler up for the first 2 or 3 goes , then nothing again. Its so intermittant its hard to know if what i do is actually doing any good.
As i say will try the over ride later but am out for the rest of the day shortly..thanks.
