a)-what qualifications do i need
b)-best way to become qualified (in order to start earning self employed/become employable)
c)-start wage & upper limit
d)-is there a high demand for plumbers (or is this a myth)

thanks in advance to all

Advise on proposed career change. Joining pipes together is far for difficult but knowing why and where is the hard part. Before embarking on this venture invest say £60-00 on books that will lay out the scoop and technical knowledge required to become a GOOD plumber. If your degree is related to the sciences it will help. G Blower has written plumbing book Hall is another that deals with design, also the institute of plumbing publish a design guide which is a must in forming a decision as to your future. You will talk with plumbers who will say don't bother with all that stuff. They are also the ones who are unemployed first in a down turn. If you decide to go for it the next step would be a college course to learn the basics, coupled with work experience supplied by family work mates by the sound of it. Understanding the structure of buildings, taking up flooring, making good, cleaning up, communication skills, customer service, etc. Then whether you go into the domestic market, bath rooms etc (they get very boring after the first 20) or industrial/commercial labour market. I would recommend have ago at both and enjoy the experiance. As to money, If you sell your self to high in the first year you will fail. After all you done 3 years for nothing getting a degree. Once up to a workman like standard you can expect anthing from 3 to 15 hundred a week dependant on knowledge and speed. There is a demand for GOOD plumbers but not those who want to become millionaires over night.
Good luck

The course supplers are lying when they say there is a big shortage of plumbers, as there acually is a shortage of work within all of the building trade at the mo.

You can succeed if you are prepared to work for yourself.

Good luck.

Just for your future info..I have just completed a BTSC fastrack C&G Level 2 & 3. The facilities are great, the trainers are by the book. They work you damn hard and the work rate is relentless. If you can't make the cut you can easily find you struggling. Even experienced employed plumbers cannot pass the academic exams,so think hard.
It's a tough course especially when there are large sums of money involved and boy do they get every penny from you..

belive me theres no shortage of plumber every unemployed person between london and bucharest is now a plumber prices have halved in the last 2 years i spend 3/400 pounds a month on advertising and cant find enough workand ive been doing it for over thirty years so i had a customer base which has dwindled. first all the builders went to spain and now all the indigenous londoners are in essex and herts
those left dont want good plumbers they just want cheap half the property has been bought for buy to lets and the landlords want it cheaper than cheap
people with the money now insure their plumbing and heating thru the big companies who mostly employ fastrack plumbers for little over min wages
the only place theres any real money left is in commercial gas but i cant be rsed to retrain for the short time i have left
