Hello,

Been asked to decommission old and install a fireplace surround and new gas fire. Gas line upgrades required as compression fittings under floor, signs of distress on gas copper pipe evident as not sleeved through walls and covered with concrete. Also need to build up the builders opening as it is too big height wise. Flue tested great, no problems there.

Now I have never actually installed a hearth and surround etc, ever, and I am not too sure how long it would take etc. Got a guy I know asking 150 forit plus mortar n bits at 30.

Am I better off getting him to fit that out and just look after gas line and fire or put it all in myself?

What do youz do?

Thanks for looking

Do it yourself. I quite enjoy it and it doesn't take long. I use bonding plaster rather than mortar.

Guess it depends on how much £ you're making. If you can pay him 150 to do it and still make a wedge then why not. Employing other people to do work for you is how you make the big money in this game anyway, no?

Bonding plaster. Is that easier? What about making the builders opening smaller? needs to be about 50mm smaller as it is about that over the max opening height in the fire MI'S.

Cheers.

I agree that getting other people involved and out doing work on your behalf is how to earn more, but I am pretty quiet at the minute. Need to have it before I can share it. Lol.

If you haven't got the work, then do it yourself. If you are busy then get someone else to do it. Even if it takes you longer than you think, if you can price that part of it at £150 its better to have that in the bank than sitting on your arse at home.

Plus 1.

I'd do it myself as it's a break from the norm. I use mortar for the hearth and tile adhesive for the surround.
