Think I'll def have to see what they've got in the way of that in city plumbing

If you cant get a tap connector with a flat seating, that use an old tail of a radiator, the union type and put a compression FI coupler on it.
 
or if you are going to drain down from a rad valve, just get a 3/4 tap connector for a hose and connect your hose to it and run it outside.
