Hi everyone,

Really busy and think i need to take on someone as do not want to turn away work, but not sure the best way to go about it. would appreciate some advise on how others have grown their business without ruining their reputation.

i.e.

- do you prefer sub contracting or employing paye - i would prefer to sub ideally just for reduced cost of admin, flexibility & pension but worried about them poaching work & also hard to find a good subcontractor used to working in private domestic properties.

- best place to advertise the position??

- what other issues or costs would i have likely over looked (salary, pension, van, tools, insurance, employer liability, added admin cost)

You are looking at 45-50k to employ an engineer. You need to pay ni, pensions, imsurance, van, van insurance, training, power tools, sick days, holiday pay...... sub looks after all that and you pay as you require them. Both are a minefield as finding reliable people is tougher than getting new customers.

I ask my local plumbers merchant for any recommendations he might have. He is a good guy and I have been loyal to him, followed him when he got a chance at a branch managers job. He looks after me with the guys he has put me in touch with as he has them sussed before I call them.

Guys already running a business and have relevant qualifications and tools. I pay them when they give me an invoice for the work carried out and sort materials on their behalf through the same guy who recommended them. It works out for me. Covers jobs when I am busy and occasionally I get something off them.

Should add, they have not all worked out. One left a gap on a flue connector on top of a worcester, he had hung it too low and just left it. 1st job he had done on my behalf. I went round and had a look over installation before collecting payment and had to take flue off and modify flue hole to accommodate the flie true position as the 3rd screw would not go in as it would not reach!!??

In the long run employing paye is better. Generally people want a long term job and will be more loyal. With subbies you have a risk that they want to do their own work and will poach customers or just up and leave if a slightly better offer comes along.
Both routes work, its about finding the right person and for the right money. I have been through loads of subbies over the past few years who have all claimed to be able to do everything required, the reality has been somewhat different. You need to keep an eye on them over the first couple of weeks and get rid quickly if they are no good.
