Yes I would have expected them to but National Grid do not enter the premises as it is not their remit. I isolated the hob but had no idea where the boiler cock was as no book and the installer would not pick up. As the house has had a major refurb it is just possible that a carpet fitter has nailed a pipe but I am surprised at the lack of smell.

strange!
had the grid out last friday due to a bust meter on outside wall as i was installing new cooker.
not only did he do the meter he also went up stairs re-lit the boiler and checked the installation as he chatted to me!!
think you got a jobs worth there?

is your boxing in all vented as per regs?

No all is internal and now boxed in and tiled. No smell of gas in the loft either.

so, you have had recent work done since boiler install?

nail through pipe then!
if your in nottinghamshire i can trace and fix leak for you?

Yes all correct and signed off. This whole NG thing has been a farce. 4 engineers said it was safe, 1 area managers said it was leaking, 1 area supervisor said it was dangerous.

My money is on the boiler faulty or the carpet fitter with his nail gun.

nine time out of ten its the screws in the door tread plates thats what ive found unlikly to have a gas pipe along near the skirting

And how come ng won't enter the house. Surely they should check the appliances are shut off or have to re-light them at times.

It's crazy really , they're quick enough to test , disconnect and isolate but they won't spend ten mins to check what the problem is,

Mind you there only qualified for pipe work and meters aren't they? But leak could be pipe work

Pipework buried under concrete for pedestrian access 40mm, in open ground 375mm. NG only there to test if there is a leak or not.

ask your engineer where the boiler book is, he may have it sat in his van/ took it with him to register the boiler with building control. Are you living at the property? sometimes ill keep hold of the paperwork if its a property full of other trades to ensure its kept safe.

My experience with the NG lads as always been positive. Normally by the time I've got there they've always identified the leak and capped the meter, and left word with my customer of the general area of the leak.
I got called to a newly installed meter a few years ago which was fitted and left capped off due to a failed TT. Did my own TT when got there and couldn't even establish stab', soon as I shut the ECV the level in my manometer dropped to zero, asked the old dear and she had never smelt gas, asked if her gas bills were expensive and she said 'very'.
Long story short, she had an unused gas fire sat in her dining room and the pipework behind had rotted through in two places leaving two holes almost the width of the 10mm pipe. No smell of gas as it was being dragged out by the chimney flue.

It's not the fact that they won't work out where the leak is that bothers me. It's whether or not he actually checked all appliances were off before testing. The way the op is wording it sounds like he didn't step foot in the house to check.

Update: NG arrived on Thursday and took the iron outer off the pipe and buried the plastic inner in the trench I had dug NO CHARGE YET.
However my "mate" has yet to reconnect the meter and find the leak.

Further update: gave up on my "mate" returning to connect the meter and trace the leak today. Following a search on our local community Facebook page I had a local GS fitter out to connect the meter. Test showed no leak by at 10mbh and 2mb over 2 mins at 21mb. Not the 4mb @ 3 secs as found my NG. We traced the leak to a faulty brass male iron at the hob which cost £2 and 10 mins to fix. Further drop test showed zero at 2mins. Happy Days.
It appears that the combI boiler HE Temp was set to 6 and Eco was off so when NG did the drop test after turning the gas back on the boiler was trying to heat the standby water which looked like a leak. As they could not gain access to check the boiler they just capped the meter.

Pleased your a happy bunny and all sorted.
Ta muchas for the update
