Can someone clarify the rules and stipulations of the pipework requirements to an inset gas fire, I cannot find any reference to it in my BPEC gas safety book. I understand that pipework should be wrapped in the opening prior to entering through the casing and sleeved through a wall, but I remember my old boss telling me that there should not be a soldered joint anywhere near the fire, thanks in advance.

i get the soldered bit-heattt coming from fire....what else do you want to know??, cant find a question in your ^^ lol sorry not being rude, besides when sleeving through brickwork, its should be sealed from one side(you missed that bit out), anything else?

Thanks Hardy, so the soldered part should be outside of the casing? Thats my main point really. So any joints should be mechanical inside the casing, is that correct?

to be honest-good question there, i dont know to be totally honest, so i wouldnt give you false information sorry, but i will read up on that to see if there anthing i find, butttt thinking about for example a mechanical fitting(compression)-(gas) behind a gas fire that wouldnt be accesilbe ?

quick question:- are you gas safe registered?.

Yes I am, and mainly do central heating installs, but i have a gas fire installation and I'm refreshing myself with all the regs relating to this task, and I've been searching in my literature for the above question.

ask it in the gas safe register forum, sumone should reply there prompt.

no probz orange, good one question though, bit of reading and info finding. good one.

MI dictates everything, and some may differ, but TBH why would you have/want a fitting in there, first fix done properly with 1m x 8mm plastic coated copper built in and terminated properly will allow you to simply fit the fire and connect it to the inlet, inset fires are the only place where you are allowed gas pipe inside the wall, so you can get the pipe behind the fire, so with a bit of planning you run 15mm to a valve at the side of the fire 15 x 8 reducer in the valve then the last bit shaped and fitted, all brickwork sealed and base cemented in then fit and connect the fire

Agree with Kirkgas, however I use a solder reducer and put isolation valve under fire, BES do a 8-8mm test point and Isovalve in one

i was taught not to solder in builders opening or under fire but seen so many soldered under and in builders opening.

Neither have I used solder fittings under a fire, what I was say was as Kirkgas said when doing 1st fix use 8mm Coated solder to 15mm out with builders opening and use comp iso valve under fire

Spoke to gas safe and they say its fine to use a solder fitting under a inset fire.Gas safe tech said when inset gas fires first came out it was not recomended but any modern inset fire its ok.
