i have been to a gas leak and can not find it,with appliances isolated ,the leak is on the pipework and quite significant, what is one to do,i'm back tomorrow to tackle the kitchen floor,i didn't no that you could get 22mm copper pipe in 5mtr length, i do now, lifting flooring every meter looking for joints, whats your procedure.

See if you can break the pipe work layout into sections and cap n test different sections. Failing that start at the meter and trace pipe. Or repipe?

cut pipe in the middle of the carcus and test meter side. then work forwards or backwards from there.

i think you can get most copper from 22mm up in 6m lengths.

The standard length for all copper was always 6mtrs.
It was only when manufacturers had to start supplying 3mtr lengths for the big sheds that merchants started stocking 3mtrs.

The leak will most likely be a nail or screw not a joint.

Find out if any work has been done in any area, new carpet, flooring, skirting, sqeeky floorboard setc.

Breaking into sections is best.
Split it half way, then whichever half leaks split that again if you can't pinpoint it.

when your local gas provider gets a call regarding a gas leak, what is there procedure when at property do they have to isolate all appliances, or disconnect or cap at meter only, the

Daft question have you capped the meter, just to make sure it's not the meter/ gov leaking

the leak was on the bayonet fitting and the last place i looked as it was behind a fitted unit in kitchen and i wrongly made an assumption that the provider had isolated both the boiler and gas hob as the customers told me it's under the floor as the provider told me, another mistake, i listen'd to them , i'm off to get paid for a days work for ripping this mans house to bits, wish me luck.provider capped meter

i had a feeling this was going to happen the guy not going to pay me,he is saying i should have tested the hob connection first, and if i'm honest he's right,i just got caught up in ,the provider isolated the boiler and said the leak was under the floor,it was that tounge and groove flooring a nightmare to get up,and never goes back down the same, how would you handle this cut your losses or fight your corner.

learn for next time, maybe next time instead of looking for a leak, just quote to replace the pipe under the floor in one complete length of trac pipe. that way you can just say to the customer its gonna cost you x ammount before you start.
you might even be able to pull yourself some scrap out ?!

Even tho you admit it should have been found without alot of searching and time you still found and fixed a gas leak for them which was nothing to do with you so you are atleast entitled to some form of payment for fixing the leak.

Oh! Dear done that myself easy to get carried away especially if you have customers telling you what they think it is. They can get a bit upset if you appear to doubt their word by looking at the basics again.
I would just say "Got to do it from scratch, just to check!"

Was the smell in the kitchen near the units, if not there was no reason to start there.
Lots of faults take a few minutes to fix, but sometimes hours or days to find.
1 man could find a fault in 5 minutes another might take 3 days, some of it is down to luck some of it experience.
You've done the work you should be paid.

If the leak was in the floor and you ripped out the kitchen units I doubt he'd have paid you either.

I'd cross him off your customer list if I were you, he'll catch you out again.

Invest in some decent gas detection equipment and save yourself a lot of time and hassle. Always approach jobs from base principles and start logically.

Apologies for bumping this week old topic but I once had a bit of a head scratcher trying to find a gas leak.

Cut a long story short, when carrying out the tightness test it would be fine until the last 30 seconds or so and after a few more tests (was convinced it was my manometer hose so changed it) I noticed the pressure dropped when I shuffled around on the floor. It was a floorboard nail which had pierced the 22mm pipe below and when my weight was on it it was plugging the leak.

It'll never take off.

I've got an inexpensive gas sniffer which is massively useful for the infrequent occasions it gets called into action. Walk around listening to beaping. A gas leak a couple of days ago, isolated within 5 minutes to a section of old barrel under the concrete floor. Cut, capped and all resolved. Unused bayonet and gas fire isolated. One very happy customer in under an hour. A top bit of kit.

They are good, plus it feels a bit sci fi wandering around with it beeping. A bit Ghostbusters even!! :)

Im glad someone enjoys it. I feel like a right tool wandering around a house with a flexible probe hanging off my analyser sounding like I'm radioactive.
