Hi

As a new engineer I have my first Gas Safe probabtion visit scheduled for next week, what sort of things can I expect and how can I prepare myself?

Thanks in advance

Richy

dont worry about it they are just human and are not there to catch you out , Make sure you have a earth clamp cable , I have been doing the gas for 20 years and still havnt got one but have a set of jump leads in the van.

they just check to see if you can gas rate and do ventalation and general safety stuff as gasmac says nothing to worry about

I don't do gas so no experience of this but if it's anything like an OFTEC inspection (which I think it is) don't be frightened of asking questions if you're unsure of anything. When they watch and talk to you they'll know you'll know most of your stuff anyway and if you ask the odd question it will give them confidence that you're trying to make yourself better and are conscientious.

With mine, I was asked to do the usual stuff you'd expect to do on any service/safety checks, etc.

Let by, tightness, gas rate, burner pressure, ventilation, flue condition, fga, flue-flow and spillage tests if open-flued - that's about it.

So long as your procedures are in order (as ACS), then you'll be fine.

Ensure you have documentation ready - Landlord Safety Certs, inspection records, or similar - safety notice pads (ID/AR/NCS), warning labels (ID/AR), FGA calibration report (in-date!), smoke pellets/matches, u-guage, etc...

Nice one thanks guys thats put my mind at rest, had visions of them trying to trip me up with random questions.

What ever you do make sure your gas safe inspector has a sense of humor before you crack a joke. My inspector hates me because i failed to see that he was VERY straight laced and i made a funny (to me) joke about the state of my gas meter pipework in my new home :S, yet he still passed me :) its mainly the fundamentals of gas work, i,e how to do gas rate, what to look for on gas installations, clearances for appliances, flue clearances etc, just remember - safety in mind at all times.

the mates i stayed in contact from college both had their inspections on a friday afternoon and both took 10 mins
mine however was 1st thing on a monday and was grilled for 2 hours over 2 different locations

dont get me wrong the guy was alright, i didnt own an analyser and he even lent me his

Mine was alright as well wanted to schedule 3 jobs to see after second was satisfied and said thanks and was on his way even thought he second system was to hot to do a analyser reading happy i had all relevent bits for it

Hi Guys

Just to let you know how it went, he arrived and we had a small chat then he explained he would just be visiting 2 of my 3 arranged jobs I had lined up, so we went to a cooker install and a boiler install, did tightness test, pressures, visiual inspections, FGA, gas rate, asked me some questions all went well, he seemed really willing to assist easy to talk to, only thing he picked up on was that boiler needed room thermostat as id only put internal clock in so got that done within half hour of him leaving. He left happy saying see you in year so im happy big relief off my shoulders,

Cheers for all comments again

what hapens if you dont have a flue gas analyser?
You don't need to have a flue gas analyser so nothing will happen but I would recommend purchasing one for future use especially servicing & breakdowns.

yep im in the process of getting one, so when i have my probabation period will i be asked to carry out fga reading and tests?

If you have an analyser when you are inspected do FGA. If nothing else it shows that you are competent in it's use & it's good practice. I carried one out when I was inspected & he took the printout with his paperwork.

ok thats fine i understand im not asking about being competent e.t.c cause i know im competent in using it i have acs certificates to prove it and have used one before but i just dont own 1 thats all im saying, my question is: will i be marked down or anything for not having one?(any1 know)?

Yeah, I know. There is no requirement to have a flue gas analyser. Therefore if you don't have an analyser you can't do flue gas analysis. No points deducted, no marking down, just every other part of your inspection will be assessed.

cheers for that info-but ive also heard that the probation inspector might give you his- if so just use it and carry on?

why not?(if i may ask), any1 else?- is that true?- if the probation inspector says use his just use it and carry on?

Lol, I can't answer it because I don't know not because I'm keeping it to myself :smiley2: when I was inspected he just arrived with his file. He didn't know I had an analyser & he didn't have one with him to lend me if I hadn't. In my opinion they are much more interested in seeing that you are working safely & can answer the questions that they put to you.
