Need to do some new heating runs at a refurb job and the builder is insistent that I’m not allowed to notch anymore. it’s going to be nigh on impossible To run the gas pipe to where it needs to be unless I can. Do any of you more learned persons know of any reg changes? These are ordinary wooden joists no special material or anything like that

Can the builder quote the Reg that prohibits notches?
Is there an architect or structural surveyor involved in the job and if so is maybe their spec not to notch?
Is he getting confused with not notching Latice or I beam?

Suggest the alternative is surface, up and on the ceilings or outside up and around windows...

Thanks fella I didn’t think I was cracking up. It’s laughable really they are the existing joists, some of which have been notched already from a previous install. Of course I won’t be encroaching on these and affecting the structure of the joist but I just couldn’t get what he was going on about.

I had it before as it was listed / old couldn’t notch or drill only exception was where existing were / old notches
