We have an Ideal Classic FF280 which fires up via a programmer and runs perfectly providing ample heat and hot water however whenever it comes to the end of the programme when the boiler turns off the overheat thermostat button "trips" and has to be reset in order that the boiler can operate again.

I have replaced:
  1. The overheat thermostat
  2. The potentiometer
  3. The PCB
The boiler still has the same fault. In the evenings the programmer will switch the boiler on and it will run for five or six hours faultlessly. The programmer will then switch the boiler off and this will operate the overheat thermostat button. Interestingly if you manually operate the programmer during the day for an extra hour it generally does not "trip" the overheat button.
Can you suggest anything further to replace?
thanks in advance.

Are you gas safe registered as you've replaced parts ?

Sounds like the temperature is rising after switch-off due to residual heat. Fitting a run-on timer to the pump should cure it. Depending on the current setting, you could try turning the boiler control-stat down a bit, so there's more "headroom" between operating temperature and overheat stat setting.
Is it a new installation, or has it been OK in the past and the problem has just started?

As @ShaunCorbs has mentioned. If you are gas safe then please give admin you number and they will give you the right access to discuss this issue further.

Hi. The system has been fine up until now. The problem only started about a week ago. I will try lowering the control-stat but it has only been set to 4. Thank you. Stuart.

A trained person would know that this cannot be a new install as they stopped making these boilers years ago. A trained person would also know what should already be fitted to a system. If you are trained then also give your gas safe number to admin and get yourself the GSR badge. If not please do not advise on issues that also concern safety.

Technically, you've done nothing which requires you to be Gas Safe. Perhaps an electrician or competent person, but not Gas Safe, so don't worry.
It definitely sounds like a pump overrun issue, as in there's too much heat and it's not getting away.
Has there been a new programmer fitted recently? Possibly wired in wrong and there's no pump overrun anymore.
If it's only just started doing it recently, then something has changed on the system to stop the pump overrun, which obviously worked before.
When you say it 'generally' is ok after manual stoppage, is this because you haven't left the system to run long enough before you've stopped it, hence not heating enough to cause an issue....

Technically you have. Somebody is talking out of his jacksie.

Need to be gas safe to take the case off.

What a tool.

Apologies, I didn't take in the model and just skimmed the topic quickly and the replies to it.
Yes you will need to be Gas Safe to go poking around, however, the rest of my advice still stands. If a new programmer, wiring centre needs checking out. Obviously by an electrician with experience in heating or a decent heating engineer/competent GSE.
@SimonG your comment screen shotted and reported pal

We are all guilty of mistakes. But if you are commenting on a post that mentions Gas Safe and you are not gas safe yourself. Surely you should take the time to read the full post and not just skim the thread? Unless you are trained? If you are supply your number to admin and they will sort you out.

pcb and thermostat require the case to be removed which you need to be gas safe to do
