Hi, I am a student and do not have much knowledge of what to do, been searching on the net for a while but need someone to help me in a simplistic way.

I have a Halstead Finest Gold Boiler -- not sure on the model but will the serial number help?
The burner on light comes on when the hot water is run, but it will not come on when the timer is set for the heating. It has happened once before but I managed to rectify it by turning the heating control off for half an hour -- tried it this time but no luck.

I can see that there is a rest button on the bottom of the boiler unit and the main switch. I have though about switching it off or resetting it but do not want to risk it as my landlord is away at the moment and we cannot afford to call anyone out.

The radiators all have been working previously, except in the upstairs room (which just needs bleeding) -- which makes me think that none of them need bleeding -- although I could be wrong.

If anyone knows how I can fix this myself it would be greatly appreciated, or even if you know a link where I can get hold of the manual for free.

Thank you.

heeni88 ... this is your landlords problem not yours ... !!

That said though what controls do you have for the central heating? Time clock, room thermostat? That sort of thing.... If you'r hot water is working then it could be something as simple as a switch turned off or batteries dead? Really need a bit more info to be honest :) .... Welcome to the forum, by-the-way :)

It's up to your landlord to get this fixed and at his/her cost.

To be honest you have to make an effort to contact them and give them the opportunity to have it seen to.

If you really cannot contact him/her, phone a couple of plumbers, ensure they're GasSafe registered and ask for a quote/estimate. Then call them out, pay them, then claim it off your landlord. (Law is on your side on this one as long as you're reasonable.)

It's against the law for someone to work on gas boilers unless they're GasSafe registered and I'm afraid that if this type of work is required you won't find anyone here to help you.

Not all is lost at the moment though as there are one or two things that need to be checked first - we need a little more information!

So, for starters:

What does water pressure read on the gauge?

Hi thank you for your replies. My landlord is on her honeymoon at the moment so cannot contact her until she is back, just wanted to know if something simple like turning it off for a bit would help us for the time being - as it's really cold. As soon as she is back I will be asking her to get it fixed for us.

There is a central hating control on the boiler -- with a continuous on, off and timer switch. There is a heating temperature gauge and a water temperature gauge. Then three lights - boiler on, burners on and safety lockout. We have no thermostat that I can see. Looked to see if there is another wire leading anywhere but there doesn't seem to be.
I didn't know what info to provide but if you need any more I can try and find it out...I have no clue with stuff like this.

After I wrote this I has another look and saw that the pressure is at 0 -- am I right in thinking it should be at about 1.5? I have seen that there are ways to repressurise the boiler and found the flexible hose filling loop method and the internal filling key, but I cannot tell what ours is -- have a feeling it will be flexible hose but cannot find where it is. I see that there seems to be a tap towards the bottom of the pipes -- again do not wanna touch it in case of making a mistake.

Thank you, sorry for the lack of information

these are the pictures....further down the pipes just go down to the kitchen....sorry about all the junk -- was there on moving in

Thank you very much for the manual link...been looking for ages -- massive procrastination from assignments

A filling loop is a piece of silvery coloured flexible pipe with (usually) a black plastic sort of tap on it. It's around a foot in length but usually fitted in a U shape.

Is this in the kitchen cupboards?

yes i agree take a picture of the underside of the boiler where the ipework connections go into the boiler- we can advise you if the filling loop in internal-from the pictures taken your pressure gauge is BELOWWWWWW what it should be, locate the filling loop first and check all external heating controls are calling for heat.

i think on the right i can see a black handle on a pipe i think that is the filling loop but wait for confirmation from a gas safe engineer. i'm sure one will be along soon, until then don't touch it just in case it isn't.
