hi all,

i have just repaired a dripping tap and also tightened a tap back nut. how much should i charge? i have never done such a small job before and i think charging half a day for less than an hours work is abit unfair to the customer. my plumber mate said he would normally charge about £30-40 for this kind of job. does this price sound fair?

cheers all. j

whats your hourly rate ?
was it a callout, was you already there ?
you've got to stick to your pricing what ever the job,
you have still got to get there, fuel, paperwork, time etc all comes into it.
remember if they ever claim against you how ever small the job they won't think twice about you only charged £30 or £90. they'll claims what they can.

are you running a business or a charity or just try to put descent companys out of business.
you got a living to earn charge it.
you'll be lucky down here in the south to get a hourly day rate cheaper than £55 even if it is to diagnose a fault. all chargable.

I would do it for free but leave some business cards, you will be surprised how many jobs you get that will pay better from family and friends of that one person treat your customers well and they will look after you

You should charge 50/60 quid, thats not excessive for a job well done and any reasonable person should be happy that you turned up and did it.

what you running a charity ? any descent customers will be grateful what ever you charge.

they won't look after you, you drop dead they just phone someone else.

look after yourself cause no one else will.

you run your business how you want and i will run mine how i like, i get a lot of recommendations and returning customers due to the odd charitable act because they know i'm not like most plumbers and i will not rip them off

Me personally, I would charge about 20 quid and bung em' half a dozen business cards. you get the best of both worlds then. you earn a few quid and get a bit of free advertising, whereas the customer gets a good deal and reccommends their friends/family.

>they know i'm not like most plumbers and i will not rip them off <

refering to who ?

you obviously need to get yourself on a business managment course then as thats not the way you run a profitable business.
your obviously a one man band and don't know anything about your out goings/profit margins etc and how to make the most of your business without what you call ripping people off.

its alright saying im a plumber but theres being a plumber and running a profitable business to the max.

There’s being profitable short term and there’s being profitable & reputable with a long term client basis, when building a business on a profit, profit, profit mentality you will only go so far. But building a business with a good reputation good customer basis and good profits will see you through the good times and the resections.
As I said you run your business how you like and I will run mine how I like

PS we are a ltd company not a one man band as you put it

got nothing against one man bands, probably better off in that situation in times like these.
