I have a boiler, an immersion tank and a thermostatic power shower.

I programme my hot water to come on every morning and thus have hot water to have a shower.

Just lately I have noticed that if its the weekend and we dont get up till late the shower is not very hot.

This morning my other half got in the shower and it was luke warm. However the water from the taps was hot.

I felt the immersion tank and only the bottom was stone cold but the top part was hot. Is this normal. Its not a split tank by the way just a small one.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

thanks in anticipation

If hot water's fine I'd suspect the shower cartridge. They're a pain to find but reasonably easy to replace (for a plumber at any rate.)

Re your hot water cylinder, hot water rises so hot will be at the top. When you use the hot water, the water comes out of the top of the cylinder and as it comes out it's replaced by the cold water from your cold water storage cistern in the loft. This feeds into the bottom of the hot water cylinder so it will be cold at the bottom.

Hope this explanation is not too simplistic and patronising but it's surprising how few people know about this, let alone how to turn their hot water off!

Thanks for the reply and certainly not patronising! I can unblock a sink, re-pressurise a boiler and re-wire a plug just a bit naive on plumbing issues!!

I have a hot and cold feed coming into the shower so assume the cartridge regulates the heat?

Yes thermostatic cartridge controls the heat
Get the make and model and any good plumbing supliers will get of for you as long as not a discontinued model or a very cheat model
Hope this helps

it might just be easier/better to get a compatable new shower valve and fit. Depending on the type could cost 40-£50, without having to trawl round the shower manufacturers looking for the right cartridge . . .
