Good morning. In the process of buying a property with a gas combi boiler. It's currently installed in a wall mounted kitchen cabinet by the window. Would prefer to have the boiler installed on the outside wall of the kitchen to free up the cabinet space. Was advised by a builder that this may not be safe from theft. Is there a tamper proof housing unit that's available in the market? Property is in Accrington. Many thanks.

If i am reading this right then you just want your boiler installed in an outhouse??

If this is the case then get a Gas engineer to advise and price instead of a builder .
Welcome to the forum BTW

I wouldn't recommend it. You can guarantee that it'll break down when the weather's at its worst. No sane gas engineer would even contemplate touching it with the rain beating off his head.....

Many thanks hammers4spanners. I just want to install it on external wall of kitchen to free up the cabinet space. I don't know any gas engineers in Accrington. Will have to look one up. Thanks again :)

We stayed at a cottage on a farm and the combi gas boiler is installed just outside the door of the kitchen. That's where i got the idea from. The boiler has its own housing complete with its own flue....

sure it wasnt an oil boiler

It was possibly an oil boiler in the holiday cottage these tend to be outside of the property in purpose built housings or outhouses

Thank you all. It was in a metal housing of sorts. Have just emailed the owner of the cottage to check if it is an oil boiler.

If it is gas, then I cant have it installed outside? Shame cos was looking forward to the additional cupboard space in the kitchen.

You can have it outside you just need to build an outhouse

If the farm boiler was in a type of metal locker, probably green, it was an oil boiler

The difference is that oil boilers have fewer electronics in them. And those that there are are designed to cope with the lower temperatures and damp conditions.

I've seen domestic gas boilers in external enclosures.

It really isn't a good idea!

Can't you relocate the boiler upstairs somewhere
As said by others, not a good idea to install it externally

The boiler in the house you're buying is oil? Is that correct?

If so it's much better outside.

The boiler in the house that I am buying is gas. There is an electric shower in the bathroom. So if boiler packs up we can still have a hot shower :)

is it safe to install it in the loft?

perfectly safe to fit a gas boiler in your loft, but I would add its good practice to board a walk way from your loft hatch to the boiler and make sure you have working lights, also a loft ladder which is attached to the loft.

There is a loft ladder. The Vendors young daughter plays with her toys in the loft, so I imagine there's working light up there. I poked my head though the hatch and it looks safe...Would installing the boiler in the loft require lots of additional plumbing?

Ive fitted loads of boilers outside. I live in an area where it was common to put solid fuel boiler outside (Coal mining) with correct frost protection and flueing its no big deal, regarding theft protection I can not advise

That sounds promising. Ideally I would like to put the boiler on the other side of the wall where it is currently installed to avoid messy plumbing etc...and then enclose it with some anti theft measures??

Do you get a lot of boilers stolen in Accrington then ?? build a block/brick shed against side of house large enough so it can be worked on fit good quality door with locks, and a light in shed will need insulation and frost protection , you need to speak to gas engineer about that, If you call gas safe, give them your post code they will supply you with some contact numbers,

I was just going by what the builder told me re theft of copper pipes etc. There is a conservatory off the kitchen and a small space between the party boundary fence and the conservatory. I was planning on putting the boiler in this space..
