Ditto Diamond Gas....Joined N.E.G.B ( North Eastern Gas Board). as an apprentice Service Engineer in 1977. We had a habit of changing our name every few years, NEGAS, North Eastern Gas, British Gas North Eastern and then privatisation and then hacked up into various bits where engineers could choose to either go with Transco or stay with BG.

Yeh those with big mortgages went to TRANSCO! LOL ... Coz Standby went out the window otherwise!! :D

I work with quite alot of ex bg engineers of the old guard so to speak and all say the same that it became all about profit or in there words con the customer into buying insurance, products etc. they say thats why they left didn't become about the job but about putting pressure on engineer to make company money quickly.

From what I remember they cracked the whip with scare tackticks 1st. Then dangled the carrot after that! I was taken hook line and sinker Gaspastemania. In my twenties, new family mortgage and the potential to make shed loads. Thankfully stepped away ... ! Still thankful for the experience working for them gave me... :D

i can see the difference tho with older engineers trained from school than the ones that had career change in twenties for example.Im not overly hot on breakdown and time served engineesr so to speak give you a much better breakdown on problem solving .i think this will be gone soon with the way the industry as a whole as changed which will be shame.

All it takes is a want to know gaspastemania. I still strip down knackered components to see how they work. Baxi duotec fan the other week .. I'm still learning... :)
