Thanks gasmanrob, I'm glad things have turned around for you, it's funny that some people don't want to be on the cards, some like it. As others have said I guess it's finding what's right for you. Maybe I'm a bit silly, but I like to feel appreciated in the work I do. I'm not talking about a pay rise every 5 mins although that would be nice. A phone call from the boss every now and again saying thanks would be nice. The workplace I'm in is very negative and backward thinking, you strive to improve things and get knocked back, now that's frustrating!

The squeaky wheel is the first to be oiled, often you'll find you don't get thanked not because your not appreciated but your not causing any problems and sync well with what's being provided. But I get where you are coming from just a pat on the back once in a while goes along way

FairPlay pal only ever heard the horror stories. You have to travel away a lot with the m and e firm? That's the only downside to commercial is sometimes have to jump firms to stay local

In 5 months I've spent 3 nights away although my mileage is inter galactic. One lad did 5000 miles in 6 weeks! But I can't complain we are supposed to be "South East" but they clearly have a bigger map and broader definitions then I do. It's a different game to domestic though there aren't streets and housing estates of offices schools and warehouses so I do expect a bit of travel. But in some ways it's nice to work somewhere new and see other parts of the country

SE and if I have to travel over 10 miles i get nervous 🙂 so my work on gas is all very local, its Agas and rayburns and oily boilers that cause me to potter all over Exmoor and that side of it is very enjoyable. I hate basic plumbing(baths n basins) nowadays, but seem to end up working on it for regular customers, but any blocked bogs are left for others nowadays .Just looking forward to retirement and shooting the ducks Ray likes to watch???????? they look better on a plate in my opinion.

After doing a lot of servicing, repairs and installs I decided to go work for Transco. I love it here. No stress on the body as you do with house bashing. The shifts can be a pain, but I got used to them pretty quickly and the money is good for being on the cards...more than I could have earned. I've been promoted once and I'm going for another interview today. The opportunities are enormous at the moment so I feel I got in at the right time.

8 years self employed. hard to start with. love the job even more so when we get paid. started in a Pug 206 quickly realised needed something bigger so got a cheap ldv 400 which was a bit untidy but reliable. now have 2 vans and an employee who's just passed his ACS.

in 5/10 years time hopefully more employees and me working so much.
in 20 years time retiring hopefully

3 days after completing my nvq level 2 on a full time apprenticeship the bloke I was working for shut up shop and opened a sandwich shop for a steadier life, so there I was qualified but very in experience so I had no chance of getting a full time job but I have a good mate who is a kitchen fitter so after setting up self employed and working out of a Astra car or one of my dads vans when one was spare I built up quite a customer base up out of the kitchen fitter and the other trades he had working along side him 3 years on I have put my self through the gas and now have a tidy little partner van and I am quite comfortable and I don't honestly believe I could go back to working for someone full time

You spend most of your life at work, it's important you enjoy it or at least find it rewarding. I've been in a job I hated, working for a big company, I was an 'old hand' Mr Negative because by and large all the radical new ideas ( BS ) the young managers were coming up with had been tried and tested and already failed. Found myself hating going in, really got me down...sunday night before work Monday I was winding myself up for an argument. Decided first opportunity I got I would take redundancy so I did and the pains went away.....!!! Never stay in a job you dislike immensely, no matter what the moneys like, it destroys your morale.
