Hey, I'm helping out a friend who has a sauna some 20m from his house, at the top of his garden. We're installing the shower and wondered how to get the waste pipe down to the stack. I know they say the maximum length of the discharge pipe is usually 4 metres max but this is 5 times that. I asked him if he wanted a soak-away but he said he was adamant he didn't want one. The two possible routes down the garden either incurs 5 bends or I could go straight but would need the help of some form of pump to overcome a 4ft obstacle.

Also the supply from the house to the shower is running at surface level so it is exposed to the elements. With the recent winters we've had what's the best form of insulation for the copper pipe to ensure it doesn't freeze? I'm not so sure that foam lagging would be man enough. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks,

Tom :)

bored sunday aftrnoon thort here you could allways draw the waste water off after letting it settle use it to water the garden thus takeing away the need for drainage and would keep the counsil happy cos the waters not being wasted lol

indeed it will Gray - but if OP's friend is insistant on having a shower then he is gonna do it no matter what we say or recommend, least we could do is provide a little guidance to get somethings he may choose to do at least they would be right.

yes the sewer is the the best way to go!

The garden electrics to the sauna is all well and good but run an electric shower as well?? Mmm sounds like your mate needs to get a trench dug, water electrics and sewer installed jobs done 100% end of story. Anything else is a bodge, will be susceptible to freezing because someone will leave the water on lets face it, the drain will cause problems as other things will get added as we know, and the electrics will be downright dangerous no doubt.

Tell you mate what needs to be done, how much it would cost (soft dig anything from £15-£20 a meter) plus pipe and cable etc. If he doesn't want that tell him to do it and just do as little as you can and avoid taking any money and when it ends in tears it's not your problem.
