Discuss looking to do my oftec in the Find Local Plumbers - Post a Job area at Plumbers Forums

I did my oftec without ever touching an oil boiler before ( I had installed a few a couple of years before but never fired them up that was the bloke commisioning) I havnt struggled too much in the past 1.5 years I had to make a few phone calls to the burner manufacturers on the first couple of jobs but I soon got it. If you can work on gas competently you should not have a problem working out an oil burner as the boiler is just another boiler.

Oftec is mostly a load of nonsense. At least half the questions are about things nobody needs to know. I have a friend who did the 101 & 105 course without any experience of heating systems or boilers.

Practical is part of the 101 course & I wasn't impressed with it. Still a bit nerve wrecking though! Electric safety (isolating & testing supply), fault finding & combustion setting. Not teach you much.
If you work at gas boilers & heating systems, most of the basics you will already know.

your paying for the books mainly and you wont learn alot if you dont have a good foundation in heating and boiler/burners
saying that few carpenters and butchers bus drivers doing one i was on and they got through

the regulation from oftec is pony anyway it just a money spinner for an organisation that is doing nothiing to protect the customers or the engineers in the oil industry letting anyone sit these courses and then certify that they are engineers , also next to no regulatory system in place to spot check engineers and boiler passports what are they lol im talking about rep of ireland here i dont know how they operate in the uk maybe better .how do u find it croppie

To be honest never ever had an oftec inspection, religiously filled in boiler passports only for the householder to bin them, and you don't get passports on commercial anyway.

Was in Terenure today, working in Clondalkin tomorrow. Anywhere near you?

Was on my first oily job yesterday, definitely going to give course a go.
Messy, but I liked it. :D Boiler suit to be purchased.
