165 a day mate? take your tax off that and natinal insurance your looking at 120, how the hell do you afford your tools? holidays? van insurance? van breakdowns etc etc....

not slating you at all but if you take your tax and insurance off... holidays you might as well work for someone else and have no worrys.... cos god forbid if you break a leg or arm your gonna struggle.

300 a day takes care of holidays sickness, van breakdowns, i dont see how you can survive on 165 - fair enough when all is well but your asking for trouble if it goes wrong.

We give a price for a job and that's that, this is agreed first with the customer so that they are happy and if there are unforseen circumstances or complications that are not our fault then the price may rise but hardly ever, we will warn the customer if this is likely. This way we can't take the mick if we take too long. Roughly we work for 3-400 quid a day and possibly more for 2 men but we have a long established customer base so we do not need to be the cheapest and not all customers want that. We do mainly gas and central heating work however rather than bathrooms where we can't charge as much with so many people out there giving it a go.

GomezZz, if you are going to do call out work, buy yourself a good pipe freezer. Not the answer to all problems but it will speed you up. Capital items are tax deductible (as are your accountant's fees). If affordability is the issue, but you have a viable work-flow, approach one of the high street banks for business funding. Not preaching, just a practical idea to help you.

q-plumb - I only wish I could charge those prices but if I did I'd be out of work. I make around £100 net per day which is £500 a week/£2000 per month or £24k a year - not a bad salary round these parts where average wage is about £19k and that's if you have a full time job.

plumber turned up to do my bath taps and basin taps last year up in scotland ,really old type taps, clayed in !!! after about an hour he managed the bath taps , he broke my basin in two and charged me 50 quid for the expeience ! be careful with quotes !!

in my personal opinion only
Gomezz ,I would not feel slightly guilty for getting paid for your time,
you did not walk away with £50 for 'call out',you got paid for arranging an appointment, turning up as said, establishing isolation points required, attempting to fit cartridges as supplied and assisted ascertaining that they were the wrong ones, you got paid for working and you did all this when the rest of us were at home having a cup of tea ,so quite rightly you require paying for it,if cartridges had fitted you would have fitted and taken the same time
You are located in Surrey and the charge you made is quite acceptable,as you will find when the customer calls you back to fit right cartridges, unless for the £50 you have also allowed him to watch how to do ,also
People should realise that their is different rates all around the country and a blanket price can not be given, also sometimes you quote hourly or fixed price

IMHO

Cheers mate, and thanks to everyone's replies.. great forum this is! 😀

you can only give a quote when you go to job. generally you can say round about proce for the plumbing work. but if you get there an sometimes the bath panel or any type of cupboard or arrangement might be covering the job. yopu need to thin about removing and replacing this also. generally a good start is saying 40 note for bath taps. a a starter. sinks can be diffrent. but always go to see the job fisrt even if you dont get it.

another thing you should also. do is if you see a job and you dont like it. then over quote it. i have done this many a times. the thing is sometimes the customer even after havign lots of quotes. may know of you or your work and if your good will be wiling to pay the inflated price. the best bit is it makes a job worth it. especially if it looks like it could be a knitmare.

its all about what your happy with matey... just out of that 24 grand you have to pay insurances tools and whatever other outgoings business wise so you'll be lucky to be getting 18 grand take home - still a decent wage i suppose but the stresses of running your own business - you deserve moer me old pal.

🙂

Gross £165 a day, net £100 after taxes, insurance, etc.

I'm only two years in and not known well enough (for good or bad jobs!) but as I get busier I put the price up a little.

I'm happy and comfortable - some people think I'm really good value, others just good value - but I do keep getting recommended which I feel is well worth it for the long term.

If I get asked to change bath & Basin taps it's £75 ex vat for the 4. Usually works out well. Lost out once or twice with really old stuff stuck in with the old hardened putty. I wouldn't bother looking most of the time I explain over the phone and get a description e.g is it a ped or cabinet, bath panel type etc.

Bath taps can be a nightmare I had a call this week where the hot was letting water through. Firstly no isolation valves, gate valves siezed. So drain down fit lever valves, only to find cant get the tap mixer off.

Reason for this the way the feeds to the tap mixer has been done and a stud wall next to the bath to accomadate a bidet and toilet. Fortunatley I have now stopped the water coming from the hot tap by blanking the ceramic cartridge. Explained to customer yes the taps will come off but it will involve removing the bath, the stud wall and the bidet.

Did I charge yes 🙂 I am now on a search to see if I can identify the cartridge if I can find it 🙁 and will fit free of charge. Is the customer happy yes because I have stopped the water.

All businesses will have different costs in running there business, but anyone can be a busy fool. Work out was does it cost for you to run your business you may be shocked.

, but anyone can be a busy fool. Work out was does it cost for you to run your business you may be shocked.

Quite right, to many people now do not know the cost in running their business, when a bill comes in ,they just think they will work a few late nights or weekends to cover it,(or the miss’s can) the work is not available and they get into trouble, instead of working out all out goings and budgeting over the year period, not only business expenses but also personal expences, you should know what you have to make to cover all your costs, so you can plan ahead for what type of holiday or car ,ect you can get
Any way Back to the taps, think there is a age thing here also, the younger plumbers tend to think of nice modern taps, with plastic back nuts, nice isolation points and flexi hoses, the older plumbers think of brass backing nuts, caked in paint and putty, threads twice as long, lugs on taps top stop the turning in basin or bath, so you cannot twist from above, getting a hernia trying to undo bath taps, lead and copper wastes, yeh, the good old days
How you can just quote over phone, do not know, it can take 1 hr or 1 day, you can give a rough estimateits. No good saying, some you loose,(this will happen naturally, without you adding to any lose from bad practices)some you win, as the prices given above give no room for loosing and you cannot play numbers game anyway, as surely you do not replace enough tap sets, once you loose on a job that’s it, you have made a loss, no good saying will make it up on next job, although people do, all you are doing is making the next job you do less profitable at best
Another thing I have noticed, is small businesses do not look after the pennies any more unless they really, really have to, I hear only cost an extra £10,bill comes to £98.34 and they say £90 or £95 will do, it will not, I am not tight and my family say to me how come you will spend 15mins getting the extra couple of quid from a customer or getting materials a few quid cheaper being really tight and then when we are out as a family you hand cash out no problem, like jackal and hide
But I point out if I only take £5 extra a day, say on a average year will make an extra £1300 at least profit, put that in your back pocket and you can afford to get that play station 9 or were ever we are now
If you have just finished a job for £5000 profit, you still what that £40 profit from the next one, you do not what to turn the £5000 profit job into a £4980 profit job coz £20 gone to help some punter have new bath and basin taps fitted, who you may never see again

IMHO

That is probably the best post I have ever read!

If I am asked to unblock a foul water drain I usually give a high price over the phone as you've got to really tempt me out to do something nasty. If people are desperate enough they will get you out and you can earn a lot of money in a short space of time. If people think it's too much it doesn't bother me. I'm still cheaper than Dyno Rod.

i used to be very busy but didnt make much per hour, i started to put my prices up and only got half the jobs but still made the same, therefore doubling my hourly rate
