As you can see from the above pictures my mom and dads boiler is rubbish :)

Also as you can tell my dad is a typical builder who doesnt give a hoot about rules and regs and decided to box the boiler in so it was not accessible in the slightest. For the past year or so the boiler has been losing pressure, especillay when the heating is on. I assumed this was the expansion vessel, but obvioulsy wasn't able to check.

Yesterday, it wouldnt hold presure for any longer than an hour (even with the heating or DHW off)

As you can tell ive spent the best part of two hours removing the boxing around the boiler, it was screwed in place, then the screws filled over with poly filler or something then wall papered over. Its take ages to peel back sections of paper to find the screws.

Anyway, when I got the cover off I found a weep on the pump where you adjust the speed (i have one of these from when I was made redundant so thats a free fix!!!)

Also when I removed the EV I got about a litre or so of water out if the air side, I am assuming that this means the diaphragm is completely shot, when I had drained the water and refit the vessel I tried to pump it up but I could just hear the air entering the boiler and going into the kitchen rad.

So, I have a pump, I've ordered a PRV incase its damaged (it was only 8 quid) and as there are no EV's at any merchants (major or independant) BG are selling me one.

Once these are fit, do you guys think it will all be sweet? I dont do many repairs so would appreciate your advice and also I have never charged an EV and heard air entering a rad and it scared me to be honest!!

I look forward to your answers and the slating I expect you'll give my Dad (which he deserves!)

Just a footnote.

I didn't install this boiler, it was installed while I was training, before I get any pelters about the poor install

No way of putting an external ev in?

Not enough space and my mother wouldn't want it anyway :)

I've told them to have a new one, but its been in 7 years and not a peep from it, so you cant blame them for wanting it fixed, and it looks like the parts will come in at under 50 quid. and they get free labour so they want it fixed, although they have said, the next time it breaks its new boiler time

Sound, you gotta take the boiler off the wall to do it on them?

nah, just unscrew the connection to the pump and pull it forward, its only held on in a plastic groove, it took me literally 15 seconds to take it off

If that doesn't work i'm sure he will have a pick or a sledge hammer lying around somewhere. A good dunt from one of those and Bobs yer uncle. Problem solved

Air passing through the diaphram and into the boiler/ rads Is normal if its gone. First time for anything is a bit of a worry. I'm sure it will be fine once you replace the bits. Good luck.

Ill need the sledge hammer for him if he does it again :)

ive told him last night, when they put the boards up around it next time they will have to use different fixing it atleast have the screws visable.

It was a real nightmare taking the boxing off

Should have taught him a lesson and ripped it off!

Villa just replace the boiler ;) watch it, once you've fixed those problems, few months down the line something else will break.

Boilers ant made as well as the back boiler days.
Even though i dont like touching old boilers, im more of repairing new boilers, probably becus got more experience working on em

My mam and dads boiler (glow worm) stopped giving hot water but could give heating (diverter valve fault) boiler was close to 10yr old. They bit bullet and got the boiler changed, they love me doing plumbing since they only buy materials and dont pay me any labour lol just get a hot meal in return :p

You are sitting on a stash of cash, you pay hardly any rent, it's your mum and dad, and yet you leave them with a faulty Ferroli?! You disgust me!

In all fairness once its fixed ive said I'd price everything up for a new one and they could buy whats needed bit by bit (they've got the dough, but my moms careful with money)

there are that many NTCS on this install that need retifying that its unreal. Possibly some ARs thrown in, but I'm going to service it when it's up and running so ill knew for sure.

For the sake of 50 quid for a PRV and an expansion vessel, its worth a fix, even if they get another year from it.

Joking aside. Does everyone agree with my diagnosis?

a split diaphragm causing the pressure to drop and replace the PRV as a matter of course?
