looking at some of these old boiler made me realise how far weve come in my career most boilers came in three boxes boiler, casing and flue divertor the boiler one probably weighed in at 2cwt boilers came bare meaning the first job was to put mi couplings into the holes you were going to use and plugging those that you wasnt then you had to fit the thermostat pocket fitting the flue involved asbestos string and fire cement which dried out as soon as you looked at it the fluepipes and fittings would often fill a van on there own the clips were fixed using a rawlplug tool and a hammer whilst hanging on to a three piece ladder usually wedged between two houses at 2 degrees from vertical
any holes through brickwork involved an even bigger hammer and a chisel
even when the boiler was up and running some casings would have enough nuts and bolts to stock a small branch of screwfix and could take an hour to fit
ahhh the good old days on the plus side you always had a plumbers mate and a boiler and 6 rads was a weeks work
