the whole training thing is to benefit the training providers and not the trainee.
That's not correct & not fair, training providers do not set the curriculum nor do they set the charges, they are told what they will get to train a person.
Its a pitty as the schools are far more equipt now than ever b4, the tech college i attended at the time hadnt much money so when working on boilers or in your cubicle it was always old garbage but the last time i was in renewing my gas its had a huge overhall and all the best of equipment , i think alot of tech schools are getting the good of funding to help teach the kids in a better enviroment,
Two things
1. The training we (olden's) got at school included a lot of practical stuff they come to us now not even being able to measure or use a screw driver & for god-sake don't give'm a knife.
2. Schools have had funding pumped in, university's are awash with the stuff cos they charge & get public money on top but your local FE college get very little, so it becomes all about bums on seats they have to take all the kids who have finished at school & can't find a job & given something to do for 2 days aweek, calling it "a full time course" it is the only way they can balance the books.
What you know as a FE college does not exist any more, more & more apprentices training now takes place in other training centers as its the only way you get someone you knows what they are doing.
my apprentice is with JTL and they recieve about £40,000 for every student they take on so the more the better for them. byt they dont get the final payment until the trainee has completed the whole course. my app has been training now for 6 years and still hasnt finished his write ups.
I can tell you missplumb they do not get 40K but even if they did that would cover 4 years one day a week at a training center inc staff & materials, all on site assessments at least 8+ & off site reviews, English & Math training cos they did not get to the correct standard at school, how about registering with C&G including all the costs for on-line exams / portfolios etc the costs go on & on. Your apprentice has not pulling their finger out & has not completed in the 4 years (so JTL get the full money) I wonder if your company or apprentice had to pay, rather than the good old tax payer whether it would have taken so long ???
Of course the reality is that if companies or trainees had to pay the full amount there would be NO training. You can moan about the current quality of the training & assessment across the whole of the sector but it an't bad for the money paid.
As a byline I will shortly be changing jobs my new employer is investing around £1M in 13 apprentices this year & around same number next, the type of work they carry out is not as technically challenging as plumbing & heating. No government hand outs for this training !!!
