Before you separate with your money go to google maps and type in 'plumber' in your area to see how much competition you'll be against. I did it recently and my screen looked like a massive Petri dish of bacteria. And that's just those who registered with google. It's not impossible to go self-employed but it is hard out there. Just be informed. And good luck.

if your earning £25k I'd stay as breaking out alone your not going to approach that as a net income for a long while, despite nicking your employers customer base.

The way work is looking is that someone will be made redundant soon and i was the last one in the door. I need to plan for the future now. Anyone have a heads up on a training center in Berkshire?

...and I would check your current terms and conditions of employment. Competing against them in the same industry, using their client base etc is a serious conflict of interest. I am sure they would have that covered and given you have family to look after the last thing I assume you need is early dismissal once word gets out!

Considering the training as others have suggested local college is your best bet in my opinion.

No No, it isnt stealing customers. The company i work for manages their water mains not internal systems

As my current role i am the direct contact at my work for us to do work for our clients.

Im convinced i could pull some work out of our existing customers.

You are not the first to have thought of doing that and won't be the last but you will quickly find out it will bite you on the rse.

Ouch everyones saying dont go into plumbing!

Nah mate it's up to you. This way you just see it from our side. I work for someone and he is busy, yet my mate is self employed and only has a couple of days a week work, works for a window company three days, and he's nvq3.

You say you earn 25k and work like a dog for 50 hours and only get 30minute break. If you want to earn 25k as self employed plumber you WILL really see what working like a dog is! Cushy number in the office for me all day long

Hi,

I'm a student currently studying for my L3 c&g Plumbing and heating.

Ideally I wanted to do a quick crash course because I wanted to work. However, I found that there are very few places do crash courses.

I would suggest going to college to study. Most courses are run as 2/3 days per week for a year, because I was over 17 I had to pay £400 for the couse, however most colleges can help out with the cost.

If you are REALLY serious about doing this I would go for all the city and guilds or NVQ courses as they are orientated around getting you straight out into the working enviroment as soon as you have done said course.

Hope that helped,

Georgia.
