Like many others my water has been off from before Xmas. We've now has a thaw for a few days (it made it up to 9 degrees C today) but still no water and I was wondering if it could be a problem with the water meter.

The reason I ask is that my downstairs neighbour has water and judging from the stopcocks in the driveway our pipes run together down the side of the house. His feed goes in via a lagged exterior pipe, mine seems to go under the house and rises through a back service corridor to the meter and my flat, so I can't see why he has water and I don't.

I've run a hair dryer over the pipes and they're clear in the flat but no water is getting passed the meter, so I was wondering if its likely to be a meter fault or still a problem ourside.

Hope someone can advise

I think I can answer my own question now.

I got hold of a mains key to check the stopcock in the street. To my surprise although there are two of those square plates outside the house only one has a stopcock (under the other plate is empty), which means I am on a shared main. This then runs into my neighbours flat downstairs (who has water) and splits off to rise through his utility room into the service corridor above where the water meter is.

The pipes are empty on my side of the meter (and yes the stopcock is turned on, on the meter) so the only logical answer would indicate that the meter is at fault.
