Hi first time post,
Got called out on a Sunday regarding a boiler breakdown.
Previous day both electric and gas meters had been changed to smart meters and the boiler had been deemed AR as the pilot would light (electronic ignition) but main burner failed to light.
Inspected the boiler (glow-worm). All OK other than the need of a bit of a clean.
Still would not spring into life.
Then checked the power into boiler, 240 volts on the neutral which made me suspicious so fetched from the van a socket tester and found 3 other sockets around house reversed too. (reverse polarity affects flame rectification).
Called power emergency out and they came out within 30 mins and proved my suspicions correct that cables in meter box were reversed. He could not swap the cables round in the meter box as this holds him liable for any damage the reverse polarity may have caused so pulled the main fuse.He told me this was a serous issue and installer could be looking for a new job Monday morning.
The energy supplier came back later that evening and rectified the fault.
Not a common problem but might help someone else in future who reads this.
