Hi all

Can anyone tell me if its possible to wire up a 6-wire Switchmaster 3 port valve with a modern heating and hot water timer (Grasslin Qe2)? I have seen the posts on wiring up a new 5-wire valve and the colour conversion, linking the red/orange etc, but none that mention fitting a new programmer to an old valve.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Kevin

The answer will be yes syncronman :) :welcome: to the forum :)

They have some kind of integral relay or something that means having to alter the wiring ... however they're normally controlled via the respective thermostats rather than the programmer I believe ... A programmer will generally have the same supplies yeh? :)

The instructions with most programmers will come with a conversion guide to alter wiring from the old programmer to the new one.

Im not replacing the timer it has been replaced in the past but never wired up correctly, its a Grasslin QE2. Its a bit embarassing really but for the last 6 years the timer has only worked on the heating side and this had to be without the motor being attached to the valve, so we have had heating and hot water at all times with temperature controlled by tank stat and boiler thermostat. The room stat didnt do anything and the valve was just left in the mid position.

The timer instructions have a wiring diagram for a fully pumped three port valve set up but they only lists valve models with 5 wires. It may be possible to use the 6 wire switchmaster but without a wiring diagram i have no hope.

I think i'll opt for a modern valve so if anyone knows of a straight swap without pipework changes it would be a big help. I think i read somewhere the Drayton three port valve may be the right size but i cant remember where i read it.

All modern valves will need the pipework altering slightly from the switchmaster one. I've got a wiring diagram for the switchmaster system that I can e-mail you if it helps.
