Do most people tend to trust the gate valve on the cold feed to a hot water cylinder will turn off and back on again, when wanting to work on the hot pipework, swapping a bath tap no isos. Or turn the cold mains off and drain all tank.

If they don't hold up then you aren't in way worst a situation anyway, still have to turn off main & drain cistern.

If it holds you have saved all that time & 230Litres of water which is why they are required to be fitted under the Water Regulations 1999.

Depends on the quality of the valve.
Pegglers, conex or lever valves ar fine. But the cheapo valves aren't worth fitting.

If it is a quality valve it should be fine

I don't trust gatevalves on cold & hot supplies. On heating systems they tend to be more reliable as the heating system water doesn't corrode them normally.
I find that even just turning gatevalves off gently and not fully tight off will still often have the gate broken when I go to turn valve on again.
I tend to just bung the tank as it is the same thing as turning a valve off. Obviously I won't leave it like that if I had to leave pipework open, unless I am going to complete the job, - new taps, or tap works etc.

Could lose you at least half an hour to an hour trying to replace it on a cold tank - and that's if you carry same valve.
The jobs that I have been on that were only to be a couple of minutes to replace a tap washer and I ended up turning into Mr Angry with an awkward gatevalve to replace on a pipe with no movement.

Has happened all the time with me, and water over here is generally good and not always aggressive. The cheap gatevalves seem to be poor brass and poorly made. I replace them with lever valves on cold and hot supplies everywhere.

Normally snap when shut then your fecked get the 12v pump out

If it snaps then I snatch a lever valve on to replace.

I will look at the valve first though and then decide wether to close or drain. Always snaps when you are in a hurry.

When needing to plug a tank outlet, usually find it is hexagonal or internally ribbed so rubber bung is ineffective. What's needed is a mushroom shaped stopper where stem would locate in hole and dome could be pushed against outlet with length of plastic pipe braced off opposite wall of tank.

I've taken that as verbatum (remember when they made floppy disks) and never actually measured it and i don't know anyone who has. It depends where someone has melted the pipe through the tank

Gate valves are fine if you treat them like a woman. With a gentle touch.
Treat them like a hoor and they will hurt you in the wallet and kick yer nuts while they are there.
We have soft water up her tho

Must be a "part of the world thing ", I've never seen a tank connection anything but round !

OK tamz, 70/50 gal if thats better for you (227L) imperial boys.

It is 230L in all the books now because the little darlings will find it easer to remember also makes it easy when it comes to single supply cisterns.

It's Btu's . If we changed to metric for that, surely it should have been Calories, that's the closest type !
