Hello all.
As part of a new extension our builder organised his plumber to relocate our existing water meter, as it was slap bang in the middle of the 2.8m wide opening to the new extension. It went from old location (under the sink) to new location ( under the new sink).
As far as I know, his plumber just did it, i don't recall them asking me for the yorkshire water account number to advise them that they were going to move it. No problem though, i thought, because its gone from "under the sink" to "under the sink", so i forgot about it. Not only that, I was advised that the plumber used regularly sub-contracts to Yorkshire Water to fit meters in new builds etc, so should know what hes doing.
Fast forward 3 months and our quarterly water bill has arrived, and is 75% cheaper than it was previously. Nothing has changed other than the water meter was moved.
I spoke with the builder who organized the plumber, and hes said the plumber would not have done anything "special" to the meter, all seals still intact. He said its impossible to tamper with the meter, the only way would be to physically bypass the meter, which from the pipework you can see has not been done.
So, I don't understand why water usage has reduced so drastically?
Its gone from about 40m3 per quarter (£120ish/£40 per month) to 8m3 per quarter (£45ish/£15 per month). Id recently realised that we seemed to be "using" alot of water to say there is only 2 of us in the house, and both at work during the days, and was going to contact Yorkshire Water to try and find out why and perhaps see if I was due a refund for the last 2 years of (potential) overcharges. However, I'm quite worried about ringing Yorkshire Water now, as they wern't informed of the meter being moved, and dont want to get some kind of fine or something?
So really my question is, was the plumber allowed to move the meter without informing YW or not?
Thanks
