Hi,
Our cottage is about 100 yds from the road where the water company's mains supply reaches. Our water supply pipe (black, 3/4 ins rubber ?) then runs down to the house buried (deeply enough hopefully), alongside our drive.
Before it gets to the house though, it has to cross a stream, a few feet wide, but fast flowing in winter. Currently the supply pipe is encased in a plastic 2ins pipe and just buried a few inches down along the bottom of the stream. It is then covered with rocks, stones and gravel.
We've been here since 1979, and just the once, the water supply froze (in 1981 I think) for more than a week. At that time the stream itself was pretty much frozen solid.
This winter, our water supply has not yet frozen. The stream never quite foze over completely this time. But I was thinking if there is anything I can do to improve the situation?
How should the supply pipe get across the stream? Is there some special (dry, insulated) casing we can use to bury it in?
Any ideas/advice/experiences much appreciated.
Thanks,
ApEmyr
