Hello , Still in holiday mode and and wish i was still there . Just changed a cylinder like for like ... or have i .... . I have a coke backboiler unit and combination clyinder in the loft . No other tanks .
The cyl was leaking and as old as granpar flump,so i put in a indirect combination clyinder. Should i have put in a direct clyinder ?

The central heating will not fill up .

Now after been on my throne for half our i thinks that i have put in the wrong cyl .
Ca i do an easy fix and put in a feed and expantion tank or will i have to change the cyl ??????:confused:

Yer but new skool . Not old skool . Put loads of std cyl in ( two tanks and cyl .... ) . This combiation tank has done me in ,or is it the fact i have put in the wrong cyl ?????

could be that the old one was a fortic primatic cylinder if i have read this right then an easy solution would be to put a pressure vessel kit on the heating

Yes you will have to fit a feed and expansion tank to pipework, hope you have not left coal back boiler operational with pipework sealed up to the coil in the new cylinder !!

No fire on . Going to put a tank in to feed the c h side of things .
And hope this works , fingers crossed . Will post the out come next week .

Yup, sounds like you had a Fortic Primatic (self priming) cylinder in originally, particularly if you didn't have another F&E tank other than the Fortic.

If you're going to put the two tanks in etc then to comply with the Building Regs when installing a new cylinder you should really upgrade the controls as well.

Is solid fuel the only source of heat ?

Do you have a "heat leak" radiator ?

A good option is a Dunsley Baker neutraliser.

I will only be putting one tank in to supply the ch side.
No heat leak rad . The 7 rads in the house have never had trv's fitted.
the whole system has been in for 30 or more years and the house will probley be knocked down in the next 12 months anyway , so Building Regs is out the window !!!!

you still have to follow the building regs, getting knocked down or not.

you could find yourself liable for a big fine if you dont.

Hmm

If the combination cylinder is in the loft your going to have to go very careful where you put the header tank/cistern. You need a bit of pipe head over the top primary, and if your already as high as you can go in the house then it may be a bit of a struggle finding it.

It obviously depends how the system works, is it gravity, part or fully pumped?

I think as somebody has said already, you would probably be better putting in a Primatic combination cylinder. But if you can't return the one you have just bought because you have already fitted it and they won't take it back, it would then mean buying another new cylinder altogether.

Then obviously I understand why you want to fit a header tank.

If its getting knocked down, then I'm sure that it will need to be sold! So any contraventions of the Building Reg's could prove to be costly.

Hello Bernie2 .
The job is all up and running . Put in a small expantion tank about 1ft above the cylinder ,linked it into th ch side of the pipework and it filled the rads . The fire was stoked up and hot water and ch worked fine . No probs .

Next time i will take the old cylinder to the merchants and let them decide what is the right and wrong clynder.

many thanks to all that replyed
