:whatchutalkingabout This is what I was told by some miserable old duffer the other day,

My van is well stocked for emergency call outs and the vast range of every day plumbing sagas we come across. I think his point was that he earns way more than I do! I doubt that very much but as I explained to him.

I can slog my guts out from 8am to 5pm for your day rate OR I can do three small jobs start at 9.30 and be home by 3pm having earnt 3 x minimum charges plus parts.

Over the last few days I have proven this point, I have had to re-vamp 3 bathrooms in the same house, install 2 new basins, quoted 5 days but its going to take longer (with the add ons the customer does, plus all the crap that comes with it that takes longer than it should!) I still can't go back for another week sparks are in and I'm waiting for a bath, 2x basins and a toilet to turn up.

Customer is good and has said that she'll pay for a couple of more days as she can see the issues.

Anyway, I saw this 'duffer' in the suppliers today and he asked what I was upto. I explained what I was up to and then explained that I prefer my proper work!

As a slight dig I said 'I'd leave the bathrooms to property maintenance experts with no qualifications and no ability to fault find problems, in their crappy ford escorts with no sign writing, Oh, sorry how long have you been advertising as property maintenance' :001_icon16:

I think the thing about this job is find yourself an aspect of this work you like and go and do that! don't refuse otherwork but guide yourself in the direction you want to go.

I enjoy the emergency side of the business and the maintenance, I do the bathrooms but I just don't get a kick out of it.....

that side of the trade bores me, i prefer to do installs, each to their own

I prefere an install. Not so much driving around and not so many customers to deal with.

I like the idea of not too many customers, the advantage you have with water flooding everywhere is in general they're pleased to see you..

I think there are advantages to both. I love maintenance work, but at times can be a pig. Same with installs I suppose, but I have struggled more with installs than I have maintenance but I'm sure it's more to do with my lack of experience, more experienced lads I've worked with make it look so easy!

I now mainly only do bathrooms and wetrooms as I both prefer it and enjoy it. I get asked regularly for leadwork especially leadburning but who the hell wants to humph gas bottles and rolls of lead 100 feet up on a roof in a miserable Scottish Winter? Not me. With bathrooms, I enjoy the before and after results and get great satisfaction from that, besides it pays really well.

system3 do you do the tiling electrics plastic ceiling to just wondering

I love central heating, plumbing maintenance and electrical work but loath bathrooms - which is just as well because the money people are paying for bathrooms here isn't worth bothering with them for!
