You should really be turning that off Mutters. You've the electrical incomer and meter smack bang next to a gas meter with cables running with what looks to be within 25mm of the pipework.

My view is that's ID.

Its certainly not ID.

You need Met1 to be able to move the meter, sometimes its possible. I would certainly look to relocate if at all possible as it is quite close.

Stan, it is good he is on here asking questions. Lots of people wouldn't and would do things wrong, you learn by experience. I know I am a much better engineer now than I was say 3 years ago.

No problems with asking questions, That's how we all learn.

Interested why you think that's not ID, or would you class it AR?

In the viperbook it says you can use a shield if electrical apparatus is within 150mm of the meter. Has anyone ever used one? Is there a specific item you can buy for that purpose? In the viper book croppie, it says cable's can be 25mm from meter and pipes... 20130423_201652.jpg

What is the immediate danger? I wouldn't even At Risk it, I would NCS it. You would AR every installation once you lifted a couple floorboards if you At Risked for cables to close to the gas pipe. Aslong as the cables are in good condition etc etc there is no real issue.

Fair point. was looking at it from commercial pov tbh.

I would be inclined to agree with this.

I find cables feeding boilers fixed to gas pipework with cable ties all the time. I just take the cable ties off and NCS it.

I was told when I was an apprentice to put some tape on the gas pipe when I have this scenario as a barrier between the pipe and cable. Not sure what its supposed to do, but I still do it, as its what I was told.

I just use closure plate tape.

I ask questions everyday, and I mean everyday.

Sometimes i get laughed at when I asked a question and sometimes I do the laughing, but its all in jest really. I'm not afraid to ask anything, I'd rather ask and look stupid than not ask and get something seriously wrong :)

Best way to be mate. Every days a school day. The guy who knows it all is usually the most dangerous man on site.

Don't mean to change the subject here, but I am curious. What is the commercial classification then and why?

Commercial is AR any services within 25mm. I guess because commercial pipework is supposed to be marked and/or painted, cable loadings are that much greater etc.

Basically there's more structure (Or meant to be!) in the running of pipework and other services, greater seperation using conduit and trunking etc.

I would phone national grid and see if they will move it. They probably won't give a monkeys.

its currently not your problem but if you cut it out and put a new gas pipe there it is your problem.
If national grid will not move it note any reference numbers they give you along with the details and carry on the best you can. Be realistic if the meter is right next to the consumer unit then the gas pipe is going to be as well.

So it would be ok for me to bolt a piece of wood between the electric incomer and the gas meter then. And it will be all good without having to move the meter guys? The cables are easy to move a little but I think they are more than 25mm away? That is what the viper book is saying isn it?

Screw a bit wood in between or wrap it with a bit tape. Either will do.

I wouldn't use wood as its combustible. When I worked at the council we used to divide the to using a barrier. I can't rmeneber what the stuff was called now though.

I use tape, its the easiest way and takes about thirty seconds.

I suppose you could lag it if you wanted to push the boat out :)

timber is an insulator and would be fine ie. stick a cubby around one or both with it making a barrier. It would be better to move the meter over as far as you can, you do need met1 to move a meter but lets be honest if your moving it a few inches and the anaconda is ok then just get on with it imo.

if your unsure then speak to the esp about it, they will probably want to move the main to outside to charge your customer. If they have to come and fit a new meter when somebody moves in then they would need to move it over themselves (if the meter fitter can be botherd?).

Sorry chaps bit use tape on where? The meter? As it is not just the pipes that are within? Just taping the pipe wont help, or will it?

Very good, I need to get a sheet of it.

Don't use ceraboard. falls apart too easily.
