Welcome to the forum. Although you can post in any forum, the USA forum is here in case of local regs or laws
Sounds the right idea. Hope you get the job and it goes smoothly if you do.
This is the info i have received from the potential customer:
They hope to purchase the WC themselves,
They want old WC out new one put in (no need for pipe adjustments they say. How do they know?),
The floor is laminate over concrete,
They also ask 'When buying a toilet are they all the same fixtures to swap in and out? i.e.can any toilet replace another toilet?' - to which the only reply i can think of is you can replace the wc with whatever you prefer but allowances will need to be made for different dimensions.
They also say they look forward to a quote from myself.
What does everyone recommend? also what problems would you suggest i expect/look out for?
Thanks
Oh dear dear this could end in tears my friend. What will you do if you quote sat £150 and you get there to find its a low level cistern (one with a flush pipe) and the waste goes down through the floor about 2' away from the wall. In your position I'd go and look at these jobs and post a pic on here if you need help.
in future tell customer a rough estimate until you see the job, then you can gauge what is involved and what materials are needed and then you can turn it into a quote because one thing you will learn in plumbing is expect the unexpected
I find now days people are asking for prices and quotes (i know this is the idea) but then after wasting your time going over and looking (toilet fitting straight swap £120 *Uxbridge* closed coupled) you get "oh yeah that sound like a good price i'll let you know when I want it doing".
Two weeks later phone call "Hi i'm the customer about the toilet swap can you come and have a look at the toilet" I got there and she said "we had someone else out for £80 but it is leaking every time we flush the toilet, we tried calling the people back but no reply or anything from messages".
I had to take it all out.
The Multiquick did not even have the seal inside then to top it off there was no donut washer on the syphon just a lump of silicone. I showed her what ws wrong and then showed her it all working with no leaks. Should have seen her face when I said £120 please.
Was I a bit harsh? Cus I don't think so.
Customer contacted me, said thanks for the info happy with the price and they will want the job doing in the next 2 months, when they get round to buying a new WC lol.
I never give a quote over the phone, I will always pop round and have look. I try and be a bit sketchy when answering customers question too often they'll give it a go themselves. Also gives you a chance to see if there is an iso valve fitted, stopcock is working, whether its tank fed.
I always carry a digital camera as well just to take a couple of pics........ you give a price they give it "yeah, I'll call you, blah blah" if they do you've forgotten the job.......
Must admit, it's great to see a "newbie" receiving loads of help and tips. It does pay to say thank you and be appreciative though which is probably why this thread is quite lengthy.
Our standards, though, are slipping - have we got bored of taking the micky?
:tongue3: :devilish: 🙂
I will continue to ask questions when i need to as i would rather appear stupid and inexperienced on the forum compared to getting a job wrong and making life difficult for myself in the long run. 🙂
We recommend City Plumbing Supplies, BES, and Plumbing Superstore for all plumbing supplies.
