We employ course cowboys to make the tea. Unless you've done an apprenticeship you ain't doing anything else.
 
i thought they were changing the process of applicants by doing an apprenticeship type training programme with gas e.g 3 proof of x amount of time??
 
Everyday is a learning day. There are many problems you come across in the field. What worries you? Is it the thought of opening the case and not knowing where to start on a repair? Installing a boiler/ cooker/ fire? Servicing?
 
Lets face it no course cowboy should be let lose in anyone's home. Plumbing or gas!!

How did you learn to drive?

Did you do a 3 year apprenticeship?

Ive seen people with NVQ level 2 and so on paper worked up to hills, that's not the be end and all end !
 
The managing director at work is qualified up to the eyeballs but with limited experience. He's 27 years old. And has his head screwed on. He's looking to retire at 40. I will still be gaining "experience" at that point!
 
When I first did my CCN1 etc I had served an apprenticeship for 4 years. Only real experience I had was fitting. No real servicing/ breakdown or commissioning experience. Wasn't taught a great deal on modern machines either at college so it falls down to you educating yourself. Sometimes learning from your errors. Training and assessments could definitely be 100x better. Maybe it's just my training centre. This is why the BG guys are so good (usually) as their training facility's are second to none.

I didn't do gas apprenticeship
And now I teach it, is every tradesman you have met absolutely top notch at their trade? I've met a few who I wouldn't employ and I've met plenty competent, clever focused people who have done the 26 week course and are working very safely in gas, so to say you have to be time served to be good is an arrogant and factually incorrect statement
 
I've met people today that have been in the game maybe 30-40 years and do what they no is best, but it doesn't mean they are keeping up with the current regulations
 
its hard but possible to learn on the job, but can be expensive for you to do it Wrong parts tried etc) get on some manufacturers courses for a start and john regins book will help

When doing combi swaps take old boilers to bits, put back together , u learn to use ur hands, tools and brain.
 
Even if you come out of college all singing and dancing with a filing cabinet you still won't no repair game straight away and with all modern techs coming out year on year I think manufactures courses are good for everyone in repair game, I think boilers will soon be like cars were you need to plug computer in and have the right software but will be a good thing because it will filter the non registered guys out
 
i don't have one at moment, thought about it tho

Don't give them an inch, if they still there after a month, give them brass ! Don't know how others feel or do things but I like throwing them in deep end . Viper book gas meter and half an hour to work out TT . Leave pilot light on just to see if they twig. If they come in tens mins later and say all is ok, it's going to be fun? If half hour later they still trying or they come and ask for help - they are well worth keeping.

Lol ya good man, have you had them from college then

Sorry to say but collage ones are the worst. Ex squaddy doing collage is good lad tho. Most collage ones are dossers. The intensive gas course ones are pretty poor too, I had to be witnesses by the collage witnessing me do a service - tutor was a tool, NVQ magician . Found best way is some one who has the need to learn. Get them in free and just give them jobs from day one. After two years ACS. Then leave them on combi or system swaps, another year or so learning repairs. U pay for their ACS and pay them £110 per week after first year. So they do make money if u use them properly . Absolutely no point getting some one to fetch and carry as it won't make them any better nor will u have any financial gain.
 
Ya if it works for you, I get colleges ringing nearly every week or so and emails from them, would be handy some time but can't make mind up

If its a carillon Center don't !! Feel sorry for students!

We normally have 2 - 3 trainees . One new one old and one in middle .

Employers and public. Also need them on zero hrs . H&s policy and site inductions good fun. If under 18 need a special form/ risk assessment.
