There is far more to be gained in efficiency in getting the rest of the system design right, or the controls correct and understood by the householder.

Worrying about the last 0.1% efficiency from the SEDBUK ratings is like making a tiny change to the tyres in a formula 1 car, but ignoring whether the driver is Schumaker or my granny.

Go for the Vogue 40kw.

Hate to say it but your granny would win now, driving a vogue

She was a bit of a speed demon. One of my earliest memories is being on the bench front seat of the old humber, racketing about town. I can still remember the plate - POB 121. :)

Aye, hell to it, vogue it is lol.

I guess I had the itch to try something new but tbh the cons probably outweigh the pros as an installer.

I remember avoiding that car in Portsmouth once , speeding down Palmerston Rd! even got a photo of the lady and what must have been you as a nipper Ray :)

All this BS about efficiency makes me chuckle. One chargeable breakdown and your better of with poterton flamingo long term.

I was thinking something similar earlier.

Efficiency and reliability are completely different things.

If you can find a 15 year old open flue Kingfisher that has been well maintained (by which I mean serviced twice in its life, and with one replacement thermocouple), then it probably has another 35 trouble free years in it. The problem is that its only about 60% efficient.

that deserves a double like button

Put that against an average gas bill off £700 pound a year less 30/40% efficiency of a he boiler. With an average repair bill for a condenser, say being £150 per repair.

Ray, i,m spent you figure it out.

But ATAG are supposed to be the bees kness in terms of reliability no?

And if the ATAG was working at full efficiency the £700 gas bill would reduce to £434..... Ish

The ATAG is quite a bit more efficient when in hot water mode, because of the flue heat recovery, than standard condensing boilers.

I fitted my first ATAG a few years ago because the grant was on condition of you buying the boiler from Plumb Centre, they didn't stock my preferred make at the time so took the opportunity to fit something new. It's the perfect chance to try one so just go with it, you may never look back.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to argue the cost of breakdowns vs the cost of fuel.

I was just reflecting on straightforward reliability.

If I had to bet my life on whether a specific boiler would fire up tomorrow, I think I would probably rather bet on my dads 35yr old Ideal cast iron floor stander than any boiler of any make currently on the market straight out of the box.
