the pipe dangling down from the boiler (stub about 6") and didnt spot the zone valves

It looks like a tectite fitting (copper push fit) a 22mm coupler with a reducer in it.
Don't think it's the gas though. I think the 22mm with the compression or tectite elbows above boiler might be gas but just guessing based on position it finnished below boiler need a shot from below boiler so you can see service valves really.

Looks like it came from an old Cortina. If it works it works. Pity they lost the insert, they were chrome rimmed lol
 
Was fitted by a RGI less than 12 months ago, job finished he said, lass paid him and wasn't aware of any problems until We went to clear drains today, needless to say no commissioning log or registration.
