re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Neodymium means nothing to me!!

I know the ones on the magnacleans are bloomin strong. First time I fitted one.........I got it out the box, and spent ten minutes picking up car keys and the like with it!!

I have a small very powerful magnet for detecting magnetite in pipe work (an ultra strong fridge magnet). I would like a massive powerful magnet for the tip my mate gave me as above. I'll take a look on eBay. Thanks.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Old computer hard drives are a good source of ultra strong magnets.

large bolt cutters are handy for quickly removing pipework up to 15mm, never worked with a set big enough to do 22mm but it saves time when ripping out a heating system

Cut twice. Once to flatten the side. Then you can fit the rest on

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

I was taught: LSX on the olive of every water bearing compression joint, always, every-time, without fail.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

why would you do that? Surely no jointing compound is needed on a compression joint on clean and undamaged copper tube
I don't know, insurance, that little extra? What I can tell you is that i've never, ever, had a leak that I know of on a compression joint i've made, ever. For me, that's enough to warrant continuing what I was taught :)

who told you that??????????

copper cones do play up,plumb blue or similar is fine cures most issues lsx is way over the top its the same as apyling silicone to every joint

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Agree with other posters lsx could mask a slight weep, and cause a later disaster.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Guy who I trained with and still work for. Plumbing and heating engineer of 35 years.
LSX causes big issues, have found numerous blockages in systems caused by it

Well then I'm sure you've encountered the results of some people misusing LSX in some way. A smear on the facing olive side, mind you, has resulted in me never ever having a leak on a compression joint.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Paste every compression joint & NONE will leak or have microscopic weeps that seize & corrode outside of fitting.
Use Jet Blue as it is non hardening & does all types of work.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

I tend to use it on pump valves - i like a bit of extra confidence when i've been fighting with a 28mm compression in the back of an airing cupboard.

Don't carry foam filler and a chainsaw (or any sharp object) in same hand.

tips wanted: how to remove cured foam filler from clothes.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

one i remembered from pluasne

make an air test kit by stripping the rubber off an old tyre schraeder valve and solder it into some 10mm (i think) then solder into a 10x15 reducer connect the 15mm to a compression fitting, get yourself a foot pump and away you go.

KJ

What a brilliant idea ive tried to come up with a way of doin this for years ...if you were to use make up a little section with 2 valves you could also fit a tyre pressure guage.

Thanks Kay-jay :)

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

no need to strip the rubber.

put the whole tyre valve, rubber n all into a 15mm compression nut.
crank the nut down onto a 15mm 't' compression and branch from there to meter and pipe work.

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

I havn't tried this yet but isnt it a bit small for a 15mm or are you saying crank the olive up real tight?

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

put the whole tyre valve,

AceCharly I think you may just have the valve stem ,
the whole valve has a bit inside the rim , looks 1/2 ball , doughnut appearance
( Like a black rubber polo ! )

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

found out today that used electrical elements such as in night storage heaters can be weighed in as brass :smug2:

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

Store your 15mm guide in the handle of your pipe bender.

Edit: And invest in a better camera. :shame:

re: Hints, tips & secrets of plumbing - No Banter please!

stick a pipe clip on rad pipes when installing valves to prevent compression nuts sliding down and disappearing beneath the floor. or use a couple of wraps of ptfe around the pipe.

KJ
you could also press your pipe slice onto the pipe above the floor and remove it after work is done !

Yes it pops off. The teeth on the grab ring are softer than the chrome so can't bite onto the pipe. Always file it off....

Oh well thanks, the other night it was late and I only had a pushfit and a chrome elbow left whilst fitting a bathroom radiator.....looks like I need to go round and freeze it and then change it for a comp 90....

Thanks for the advice, looks like this may have saved me a BIG issue.....
