I dont realy do much install work and am new to pricing big jobs like this so after some opinions on my pricing of this job. I havn't seen the job yet so this is a rough costing and I realise it could change drasticly and I told the customer this but they wanted me to give them an idea.

3 bed hose, all average size rooms, no gas in property so completely new install, no solid floors, boiler going in atik, 2 floors, 7 rads to be fitted, estimated 6 days work.

I priced it roughly at
£1000 vaillant boiler
£400 materials
£550 rads
£900 labour

Is this about right ?

Is this the quote your planning on giving?

How can you price your boiler, materials and radiators roughly?

Work out what you need, get a quote from your suppliers, add your mark-up and use that in your quote.

It's almost impossible to quote without seeing the job.

Six days seems a bit excessive.

Keep the labour the same, and as above price materials. Four days on your own max. And if the boilers in the loft allow plenty of tube and I hate to say but a sparky to.

Why do they want to put the boiler in loft ? last place it wants to be ! loft will have to be board'd out , are they old people ? can they get into loft easey ?

How much do you want to make from the job? I would be looking for a minimum of 1k profit personally. Probably more like 1k labour and 20% on materials.

Yeah don"t forget boarding, handrails :) light and a permant means of access into the loft if it aint got one

Yeah I would like to make about 800 minimum from it really

Thnak for highlighting the need for hand rail and boarding, is there still a requirement for a hand rail if the loft is properly boarded? I have seen 100s of boilers in lofts but have never seen a hand rail fitted

£900 is very low for 6 days labour but 6 days is over the top for a new system. 4 days max at £300 a day. Be careful on your materials prices. I've just first fixed a log cabin with Polyplumb and materials for the first fix came to £574.

I've to a formal on excel for this £3,490 + VAT is the lowest I'd go.

Three sides of the hatch should be guarded to prevent you falling through and a rail from hatch to boiler posistion if i remember, but as you say 99% of boilers in lofts never have a hand/guard rail fitted

-sparky for a day
- vertical/horizontal flue /
-pipe work insulation

i think your going to cheap and will end up longer there ! Lofts are not easy to pipe !

get some one in to help you ,will make your live a lot easier ! and you will learn a thing or two on this install

Yeah thats what I had planned to do anyway. I could do with alot more installation experience, have spent 9 years doing breakdowns, servicing and bits like that, only done 1 install on my own, (straight swap) and helped out on a handfull.

6 days doesnt seem be to far out if your on your own and house is occupied boilers in lofts always take ages but your under pricing your labour you want at least 200 a day on a full instal for a customer different if its for a builder and your matierials seem very low with boiler in loft youll probably use more than the normall 2 and 1 of copper you might need some 28 for gas

Cheers steve, the general consensus seems to be min £200 day rate which is what I was originaly thinking but then I thought I would be undercut at that price. When I go to price it Ill make sure I price materials exactly plus mark up and add a bit incase.

Its not just the price that wins you jobs.

You've got to sell yourself as well. If you convince your customer your the best man for the job, they'll go for you regardless of the price (in most cases).

You don't want to seriously under quote just to get the job and then make a small profit or end up taking short cuts to make more.

Well said anz x 2.

On most things we buy, cheap price is not the number one deal breaker. (Imagine buying new pump pliers.)

Most customers' top priority is trust - trusting you in their house and trusting you to do a good job for a fair price.

size up your materials and get quotes from 2 to 3 merchants. You will want to be 100% sure about pipework and lagging as it costs alot min. 19mm thick. Dont forget controls and sparks cost also. Do you need a condense pump? do you need 28mm copper? any 35mm for sleeving?
